More information on what we know here: blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/… This is now unlikely to be a GLOF, more probably a glacier collapse or a rock and/or ice avalanche.

Glaciers as seen from Furka Pass. Hereby a truly unique visual angle to understand how those little icy patches are actually connected. Turn your sound on for the biggest surpr.ice! youtube.com/watch?v=1bs9qb…

What's this data?
What's this data?@whatsthisdata·
Mass balance of a #glacier is the gain and loss of ice from the glacier system, an important climate change indicator. WGMS calculated glacier mass loss of over 20 meters of w.e. from 1976-2005, with mean annual melting rates doubling after 2000. #ClimateChange #rstats #dataviz

@FabClimate @matthias_huss Idem, would you agree we simply have to accept some environmental impacts to eventually save a rainbow?

@RecogniceNow @matthias_huss If the "ingenious attempt" is free of carbon emissions, free of chemicals and without environmental consequences, I'm all for it! But then we could also directly focus on solving the perpetual energy problem...

@matthias_huss @FabClimate Ouch, that image speaks, thanks for sharing. Regarding the impact of technical solutions: shouldn't we consider human-induced deglaciation as an even larger impact on pristine environments?

@RecogniceNow @FabClimate Fully justified comment. Yes, very LOCAL technical approaches to save some ice where needed are reasonable. Always a question of investments and revenue: In the case of saving an entire glacier, the costs are huge PLUS major impacts on a virgin environment, direct benefit limited

@matthias_huss @FabClimate May I ask for a critical review of your own words though, @matthias_huss : “The only way we can save glaciers is slashing emissions...” Ain't gonna happen, is it? So shouldn't we better promote and support any ingenious attempt to save some glaciers?

@FabClimate At least I'm happy to see that the press is finally putting some more critical voices along with the promises of saving glaciers. This was not the case for the last years...

@AlpineBiogeo Dear Jana, we've made an animation around the collapse of Turtmann Glacier, including the glacier's previous outlines as found in your publication from 2013. Enjoy! youtube.com/watch?v=N8ow7w…

So how did #Turtmann #glacier look like before it broke apart yesterday? I had a look in my photo archive, showing the thinning of the #icefall between 2011 and 2019.

@AlpineBiogeo Fantastic series of pictures Jana, thanks for sharing. I found them through an article on @watson_news. We would be very glad to use them in a graphic. Can we talk about this privately? Best regards, the team of @RecogniceNow

Articles get published even during these troubled times. Here's a new study lead by the WGMS on estimating global glacier mass change for the most recent years. Another acceleration of losses to more than 400 billion tons of ice annually... the-cryosphere.net/14/1043/2020/
