Three ponds connected by a new planting of 1,200 trees. Seemed like a good idea to me...

Not going to be a good hay crop this year, the grass is really patchy.

@BenGoldsmith @horton_official Hardly "non-stop", it was a bit wetter than average but that came on the back of an extremely dry year and has been followed by an even drier spring than last year. We've only had 20mm of rain in the last 10 weeks. x.com/i/status/20527…
Spudd Redman@RedSpudd

Another week goes by with +/- no rain. A couple of months back I was describing how 2025 was brutal as we only had 42mm in the 12 weeks after we finished planting. This year coming up on 10 weeks and we've only had 22mm so far. Orange, actual 26, Dk Blue, actual 25, Lt Blue, LTA

‘Drought fears in southern England as dry April leaves rivers low’ It rained *non stop* from December to March. Our landscapes however are drained, ditched and engineered to get rid of water as fast as possible. This is why there’s no water. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Last of the rainwater now being used to top up our wildlife pond. The butts for watering in the garden have been empty for weeks.

Knowing that, and with experience from our first year's planting, one of the species we included in the 24/5 planting was Downy Birch. We planted 99 in the Western field. Every single one of them died in the drought.

According to the soil map our trees are planted on "Evesham 3", which means slow drainage and possible seasonal waterlogging. We avoided the adjacent Peacock as that supposedly has peat though I expect that is long gone.

The next block along is Oak. 2 alive from 16 (possibly 3). Loss rate for Oaks was c.90%

Tagging dead trees, this one's a Hornbeam, generally tough as old boots, 6 dead from a block of 16, 4 look to have grown, 6 the same size as when planted.

The end "shrubby" block. 87 saplings planted last year. 11 dead (I think nearly all Goat Willow). Watered weekly for 16 weeks, weeded twice, stakes tightened 4 times.

Zero cost option for replacing list Oaks was planting a couple of acorns at the bottom of each tube. Usually the germination rate for Oaks is about 75%. So far nothing. In our nursery bed at home we've got half a dozen from 24 planted.

What this means on the ground is that the some of the saplings that did survive last year are already showing signs of drought stress and may not survive if we have many more weeks of this.

So far I have tightened stakes 4 times, the ground keeps shrinking, the stakes keep wobbling.

@barry_wizard No, I don't really use YouTube (other than Jeep repair videos). I'm not surprised they have crops failing, we thought last year was bad but this is worse, less rain and starting from drier soil. Most of the pasture is going to seed already, so there'll likely be a grass shortage.

In total that's five new ponds dug, two old ponds cleared (both thanks to the Wildlife Trust), and over 2,000 saplings planted. Why? Because it seems like the right thing to do. And it's a nice place to drink my coffee
