Following @GMB’s presentation of a boy who recalled the antisemitic attacks on him at school and @EdBalls sitting in the studio as though he cared, I have decided to tell our story. If you have the patience to read this, I thank you. I am not typing this from memory, I am typing this from a file of papers I still have. This is our story. Queensbridge Primary School in Hackney knew that we were Jewish since whilst working at the school, I was made to work with a teaching assistant CH who said there was nothing wrong in wearing a swastika. I tried to explain why wearing a swastika was wrong but she waved my concerns away with her hand saying “I know all about that”. The matter ended up being escalated to the Head VJB. The Director of Children’s services & Chief Executive of the Learning Trust AW ran education in Hackney in 2009 as the council had made such a mess of it. The Learning Trust organised a meeting with the Head VJB, myself and staff to discuss the matter. The Head VJB said I was “oversensitive to the issues” (my father survived Buchenwald my grandfather was exterminated in Sobibor). After this meeting the then Head VJB made a concerted point to victimise my son. When I had to stay late for parents meetings all the children of staff would sit together watching a film in the main hall. The then head VJB pulled my son out of the school hall and said, “He has to stand with you in the playground”. I said, “what on his own, when the other children of staff members are in the hall watching a film”. He said “Yes”. I took my son back into the school hall and pulled the Head VJB out of his office and told him not to dare ordering my son to do anything that other pupils of staff do not have to do and if he did he would have me to answer to. He left my son in the school hall. A compromise was reached whereby Queensbridge Primary School agreed to take all its staff members to the Holocaust Wing of the Imperial War Museum each year. I believe it took place that year, but I would be very interested to know from anybody if it did continue after that first year, because cynically I doubt it. The Learning Trust transferred VJB to DeBeavoir School where one of the staff later took him to an Industrial Tribunal and he was ultimately sacked. I raise this issue to highlight the fact that the school knew we were Jewish. A new Head came to Queensbridge Primary School. In September 2008 my sons new form teacher AB arrived in a hijab. She went to great lengths to assure me that she would never allow any racial discrimination against my son as the only Jewish pupil in her class. In January 2009 my son’s form teacher, AB, decided to hold a “Bring and Buy Sale Bonanza” at the school “for the vulnerable children in Gaza”, on Friday the 30th. I have published the poster which she made and which was plastered all over the school and the school gates, this copy I took down. A friend commented it would have taken nothing to write “for the vulnerable children in Gaza … and Israel”, considering the war had been started because Israeli children were sleeping in bomb shelters at the time and had been for months before Israel retaliated. I personally did not think it was very appropriate to bring something so political in the Middle East into a British primary school where the children are aged between 4 and 11 but when you are the only Jew in the village there is not much you can do. When Grant Shapps (MP 2005-2024) became the Conservative Minister for Education he said schools should not bring the Israeli-Palestine conflict into the classroom because it would heighten the risk of antisemitic attacks on Jewish pupils. However, this event happened when Labour Minister @EdBalls was the Minister for Education in Tony Blair’s government and he had no such concern for Jewish pupils. When I collected my 8 year old son from school on the 30th January 2009 he was in a state of considerable distress. Immediately on collecting him he told me: My sons form teacher AB had gone into each and every classroom to talk about how evil Israel is. She told each and every classroom how bad Israel were and how they had been “shooting little Palestinian babies dead”. My son knew what she had said because she had been given permission by the Head to “take one of her students to sit behind her all day long” while she delivered her propaganda. She had chosen her only Jewish student, my son. At this time there were only two known Jewish students in the whole school. My son who was 8 at the time, said it was harrowing to be made to sit behind her, his teacher, telling everybody that “Israel, the Jewish state, was shooting little Palestinian babies dead”. He had to sit behind her while she delivered her sermon all day and in every class. So soon after picking him up for school did he tell me this that I went back into the playground with my son and it was still full with parents picking their children up. I spoke to the teaching assistant in his class CJ and asked him how this had happened and why my son had been chosen. CJ was beaming all over and said he was “so proud of AB” for doing it, he was positively glowing, you could see his antisemitism from outer space. In the interests of balance, NO Jewish teacher, presenter, author, etc., had been invited to Queensbridge Primary School to present either the other side of the argument, or a more balanced approach than that of AB. AB and the Head of Queensbridge Primary School were acting in loco parentis. They should have had more care for my son, than to use their position to victimise him to make them feel better about their own personal political views. He was 8. In loco parentis they had bullied him for no other reason than he was Jewish. At the time we contacted: •The Head of the school, no action, no apology. •The Teaching Assistant in my son’s class CJ, who said he was proud of this. •@HackneyCouncil , no reply, no apology. •The Mayor of Hackney (JP), no reply, no apology. •The MP for Hackney South (MH). She replied saying she would rather not intervene and ended by referring to my son by a completely different name he doesn’t have and has never had. •The Director of Children’s Services and Chief Executive of the Learning Trust (AW), no reply, no apology. •The Chair of Governors (LA) of Queensbridge Primary School who was incandescent with rage that I had not only had the audacity to complain about this antisemitism but had used an old House of Commons envelope to hand deliver it in, virtually threatening me with treason. She 100% supported the schools actions in using my son like this. (One of the governors is now a Baroness in the House of Lords). •We finally contacted @EdBalls , the Labour Education Minister in Tony Blair’s government at the time. He replied supporting the schools actions. When I see him on programmes pretending to care about antisemitism, especially antisemitism against Jewish pupils in schools it makes me sick, because when it was not fashionable to care about antisemitsm against Jewish pupils, he did not care. The reply letter was really cold and contained absolutely no caring for my sons distress. Following this incident a young Turkish boy said to my son “The trouble with Israel is they are scared of Hitler”. I went to the Head about this and she said “Ali wouldn’t say that, he doesn’t have enough English”, but she followed it up, and invited me in when Ali was sitting in her office crying with his parents. He didn’t have much English but his older brother had taught him this sentence. On a school trip a heavily built Somalian lad in an older class came up to my son and pushed him around all day. He asked him “Are you a Jew?”, when my son said “Yes”, he said, “You’ll be dead in WWIII”. I went to the Head about this, and the Head suspended him from school for a week. A girl from Ghana, followed my son around the playground taunting him that “Jesus was a Christian”. I went to the Head about this, the Head asked his form teacher AB to deal with it. She dealt with it by saying to her class “Put your hand up if you think Jesus wasn’t a Jew” and nobody did. The Head got someone in from the Learning Trust to explain to my son that Jesus was definetly a Jew who would have had a bar mitvah. I have no idea why she did this, my son knew Jesus was a Jew, he should have said this to the class but he didn’t. Mohammed in the dinner queue, turned to my son and said, “I f*****g hate Jews”, and so it went on, and on and on. Later on, the Head decided my complaining about the antisemitic abuse was stopping her from doing her job and she went to the Learning Trust to complain about it. The “Head of Law” TB, wrote me a furious letter saying my complaining about the antisemitic attacks on my son was stopping the Head from doing her job. That I would no longer be allowed to talk to the Head, or any staff member at the school including his form teacher, and that any other antisemitic attacks should be detailed in writing to the Learning Trust and they would decide whether to take action or not. I took my son out of Queensbridge Primary school. When my son left he brought his form books home with him. I looked in the form book on religion. They had written the sentence their form teacher (AB) had put on the board and then answered it. In teaching about Judaism she had written and my son (and the class) had copied: “There are many many rules in the Torah. Write two real ones and then make up two silly ones”. I wondered if she had taught Islam in the same casual disrespectful way. I have sometimes looked at the Queensbridge Primary School websites on Facebook or elsewhere. I have seen their Hindu dancing afternoon, their Christmas/Easter celebrations, their bringing in sweets for Eid. I noted once that on the personal Facebook of the Head (before she made it private), she only once advertised a charity and that was for “children in Gaza”. I don’t check anymore so I have no idea if this is still true, but at the last time I checked, Queensbridge Primary School appear to have celebrated every event of every religion, except Judaism. If I wrong, I will be glad. My son is now 6ft, he is not the small polite 8 year old AB was happy to push around and intimidate because he was Jewish. He is also a filmmaker. I suggested he make a film about antisemitism in schools and he interview AB and ask her why, acting in loco parentis, she felt entitled to make an exhibit of him because he was Jewish. He refused. Nearly 20 years later he says he can recall that day in vivid colour and it makes him feel sick.
