Especially after they betrayed the interests of that very Ukrainian people by handing local power over to lowlifes and nationalists in exchange for the opportunity to steal from the external slush fund.
No sane person, after everything they have lived through, would want to have anything to do with Ukraine at all. As for the entire post-Soviet space, the only possible reaction would be: “A plague on both your houses.”

What they also won’t admit is that reconciliation across nations will be paralleled by further polarization and fragmentation within nations. Class antagonism peaking after WWI is a textbook example. But closer to our realities: the experience of being hunted on the streets by what is supposedly “your own” state, which finds a bureaucratic trick not to pay your loved ones any compensation if you don’t return, or escaping the country across mountains and rivers, or sending your teenage sons abroad before they grow too close to the dangerous age, or doing dentistry at home because you cannot leave your apartment for years, or collecting thousands of dollars for regular bribes to avoid conscription, or when your child is humiliated at school for speaking the language of your family and of your parents’ and grandparents’ families, or beaten for the music and films they like, or afraid to say what they really think for fear of being denounced by their closest friends, relatives, and colleagues against a background of high‑level profiteering, looting of the state, comprador and nationalist grifting. All of these are true and typical stories, sufficiently traumatic and sowing the seeds of the rifts that will only deepen after the war ends with an outcome nowhere near a reunifying victory.
