The thin blue line showed up to closing arguments in Kelsey Fitzsimmons’ hearing today, and out of just 45 seats in that courtroom, 20 were filled by police officers. Do we really think they were there to support Kelsey? No. They were there to support each other and to reinforce a narrative without ever having to say it out loud, because when that many officers fill a courtroom during closing arguments, the message is already clear. This is not just about Kelsey, this is about the system protecting itself. And the system does not like to be questioned, especially not by a woman, and even more so not by one of their own. How dare a woman question their authority. Never mind a female officer refusing to fall in line. When that system is challenged, it closes ranks quickly, because if one piece is questioned, it creates space to question everything. That is where abuse of power lives, not always in something obvious, but in collective presence, quiet pressure, and an unspoken understanding of loyalty. Now layer in who Kelsey is in this moment: a postpartum mother who lost her child, her home, her partner, and her stability all at once. Instead of care, she was met with authority, and instead of understanding, she was met with force. Her child became leverage, her mental health was minimized, and her voice was treated as something to control rather than something to hear. And again, how dare she question them. How dare she push back. You do not need anyone to explain what is happening when nearly half the courtroom is filled with officers. You can see it. So no, they are not there for Kelsey. They are there to make sure the system remains intact.
