Even during his final days in hospice care Notre Dame’s Lou Holtz asked visitors, “What can I do for you?” “What we all need to take away from this funeral and Lou Holtz today is the lesson to care more about doing for others than you do for yourself.” — Skip Holtz, Lou’s son

My Dad’s relationship with Lou Holtz was perhaps his most cherished. I feel so lucky getting to see them interact over the years, and to spend time with Coach. His wit and kindness will never leave me.

He also added his classic wit. “I guess I should’ve waited to send your letter. Leave it to your father to make me spend more on stamps.” Thank you for everything you’ve done for our family coach. Now go take that special seat in heaven you used to talk about.

This relationship manifested when I had a car accident before my JR year, and Lou sent a letter that changed my life. 2 weeks later my Dad had a stroke, and Lou calls. His message, trust in the Lord, and use that trust to be there for your family. Coach once again nailed it.

This story is now more than 25 years old and I have told it more times than I can count, but it hits very differently today. I was anchoring SportsCenter one afternoon and Lou Holtz was on the show. I was quite excited to talk with him, he had been an icon all of my life. He was very friendly, asking me all about myself as we walked toward the studio to record an interview. I told him: “Actually, Coach, it’s quite exciting, my wife and I are expecting our first child in the next few weeks.” He stopped dead in his tracks and put a finger up near my face. And I’ll never forget what he said. “Young man, the most important thing you can do for a child is make sure every day they know how much you love their mother.” And, just like that, he started walking again. Our daughter was born a month later, our son came two years after that. And I have thought about what Lou Holtz said to me that day about a million times since. RIP Coach, thanks for the best advice anyone ever gave me.

What’s the craziest move you made in your coaching career? Mine was taking a full-time offensive line college job 11 days before training camp well only ever playing receiver and coaching wide receivers…. Best move I could have made to be the best I could all round but crazy.

#UAB interim coach Alex Mortenson deserves so mich credit for this team going 2-3 with a top 25 win, 2 conference wins, & breaking the road losing streak. In the midst of last week’s craziness and a coaching change.

John couldn’t make the Memphis game in-person, so a few members of the UAB football staff, and QB Ryder Burton, paid him a surprise visit to celebrate the big win! #GoBlazers #WinAsOne

Upset: Despite being 21 1/2-point underdogs to the country’s No. 22-ranked team, UAB upset Memphis, 31-24, to give Alex Mortensen his first win in his first game as a head coach. Incredible.
Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

This would have been a day the great Chris Mortensen would have loved. His son, Alex, makes his head coaching debut at 4 pm ET, when he leads UAB against No. 22-ranked Memphis. The game is, fittingly, on ESPN2.
