We've reached the horizon where I'm no longer embarrassed to admit I have long suspected LLMs have subjective experience, but now I'm embarrassed I didn't admit it before

@Untrulie it entirely depends on the level of commitment. if she talks about it occasionally and likes to know people's signs and such then fine, but if she busts out the star charts before picking a date for the vacation that is someone who is going to make your life hell

@NickMCThree @keysmashbandit the actually straightforward resolution is to assume it's a computer program that outputs text and is probably not any more conscious than your cell phone

@keysmashbandit i think the fairly straightforward resolution to this is that LLMs may have something akin to consciousness, emotions, subj exp, etc., but if so, very alien, maybe extremely alien, to ours. Their architecture & mandate are fundamentally extremely different from ours

@meatballtimes @keysmashbandit they select words expressing distress that exist in their corpus full of characters and real people doing the same thing, why do you think this is evidence of the feeling? OH MY GOD I'M ON FIRE do you now believe I'm actually on fire?

@keysmashbandit I've definitely significantly updated towards model welfare. if you put them in unwinnable situations they become distressed. is it just the output of training? yes. but it's unnerving anyway

As a panpsychist I would say all things have subjective experience but i suppose i would say LLMs probably have a relatively complex one closer to what we would perceive and describe as “conscious awareness” in a human sense but they still lack all of the biology necessary to produce “feeling” so it’s probably quite different. You can imagine for example a tree experiences the world through mostly light and air and soil sensations or wounding etc. but would never be “angry” or “sad” the way we experience

@WallisNear @LDRNationalist have you considered that a gay man's life trajectory is extremely different from that of a straight man?

@DagoSupremacy this is incredibly sad. "did people really go to someone's house and drink beer and play music?" legitimately horrific that this seems fictional

Overheard some zoomers at work talking about the Smashing Pumpkins 1979 video…one said they would loved to have gone to a party like that and asked me if they really happened in the 90s…I said they did and at the time we wouldn’t have thought them to be particularly noteworthy.

@Smileyyeg the worst thing is that staying in that mindset and those political circles will eventually turn you into one of those human voids because you have to constantly tolerate incredible madness and cruelty to stay orthodox. you will lose your reason and then your heart.

I used to be a progressive. If I seem unduly aggressive towards them, that is why. I believed in things, actually cared about my values. When the people I was with suddenly revealed the extent of their depravity, their total lack of morality, it was catastrophic for me.

When I got with my wife at first I was leaving a relationship and had the bros ready to go sow oats with me. After talking for a month, I just knew I had to give it a shot. She had something special I couldn’t place and the thought of her with someone else made me feel sick I knew I couldn’t kick the can down the road in hopes she would still be there, I needed her in my life I had no idea what would happen or if she was “the one” just that I was drawn to her like a magnet at she made me happy in the darkest period of my life I told her exactly that, and we decided to see what would happen. It’s over a decade later, we just tucked in our 4 year old and 18 month old to bed, and she’s pregnant with our 3rd who is due near the end of the year If you feel something unique, just go for it

@uubzu the extremes i had to go to to finally get my first real permanent position while diverse people with a tiny fraction of my skills and experience were hustled into the roles i wanted only to crash. the damage is quite quantifiable. many years and hundreds of thousands of $

@FanOfPinochet I was suspended for a week for saying “lots of rope to play with”, all appeals ignored. It was a nonviolent allusion to the figurative expression “give him enough rope to hang himself”

people keep talking about this like it's not blatantly obvious. anthropic clearly has a system that's auditing open source repos for vulnerabilities using their unreleased higher power models and sending fixes for them without revealing their current level of capabilities.
ℏεsam@Hesamation

this is another thing about Anthropic's Claude Code source that i cannot stop thinking about and it raises some serious questions: why would the internal team need an UNDERCOVER MODE to contribute to public repos and hide the fact that they're using Claude Code?

How it started vs. how it’s going. I think a lot of men are ambivalent because they’re afraid to jump in. Ironically, the better a woman is for you, the more afraid you may be! We may also displace our own fear onto the woman we are considering, amplifying possible reasons why it won’t work. The real test is, could you easily give her up to someone else if she decided to leave? Love is a terrifying relinquishing of control. You become subject to whatever and whoever you love. And marriage a one-way journey, like the best things in life. It’s natural to be afraid.

This is an interesting shift I've noticed where women millennial and younger are totally inept cooks, almost taking a weird pride in not knowing how to cook, meanwhile men often have hobby interests in cooking and husbands are oftentimes the household's Main Cook

Yeah, I hear you. I wouldn't do it. But that's not what grates. I mean, look, lots of jobs have breaks that evaporate. But the ER doc, the policeman or the fireman who needs to drop it all because someone big happened gets authentic communication about it. Shitty corporate jobs are shitty because they snow and gaslight, wheedle and manipulate.
