@adamson_ma88843 @QuasLacrimas That's not true – sections from comic plays by Menander were translated by Arabs in the Abbasid period. Also 'Arab Muslims' did translate Greek literature, just later than the Abbasid period.

@QuasLacrimas It is a crucial point. There is no record - none - of Arab Muslims translating ANY Greek literature at all. Philosophy, mathematics, technology etc yes. But literature no. And you are not meant to ask why.

The little errors Lazaridis fingers here (confusing 1453 and 1437, saying Homer was translated into “all” vernacular languages instead of “some”, fabricating imaginary Arabic translations as a liturgical statement of faith) may seem minor, but these then become the starting point for a new generation of pseudo-scholars who cite these errors as authoritative and add on little distortions of their own, and by and by “mainstream scholarly opinion” is a huge Leviathan of lies swimming forward on its own momentum, with no remaining connection to historical fact.

@MagnusPharao OF course, this doesn't mean Arabs weren't interested in Homer (they clearly were) or couldn't read him in Greek (some clearly could)...only that there doesn't seem to have been an Arabic translation project of Homeric epics

@MagnusPharao According to Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʻa, Ḥunayn b. Isḥaq knew and recited Homeric epics in *Greek*. But I don't think there is any evidence that he translated them into Arabic. The only extant Arabic translations from the Abbasid period are short quotations of Homer in other Greek work

@alexandertolano You can read about the sources that exist and mention the arabic Homeric tradition here (the translations themselves are not extant). Seems weird though that early medieval Arabs would consider Homer the greatest poet, without having read him. obnova.com.hr/blog/index.php…

@aaron_benj87286 @JacobALinker Were the victims of the Cambodian genocide primarily targeted 'for the sole reason of belonging to an ethnic group'? Separately, were the massacres at Srebenica genocidal?

The definition of genocide is simple, and is what every normal, average person on the street thinks of when they hear of genocide: the deliberate killing of a very large portion of an ethnic group in an effort to destroy it entirely, and for the sole reason of belonging to that ethnic group. You know this is what people think. I know this is what people think. Coming up with some abstract technical definition of genocide where not a single person needs to be killed to qualify, but not making absolutely and startingky clear you are using the term in this technical sense and against common sense usage, is simply dishonesty of the highest level. Examples include the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the Rwandan Genocide, the Cambodian Genocide, and a few others.

@aaron_benj87286 @JacobALinker What are the genocides you think have taken place in history since 1900? And what is your criteria for a definition of genocide? Do you agree with the Genocide Convention definition?

Right they're trying to "piggyback" on what most people think is genocide. So when the common man hears them accuse Israel of genocide, they think it's the truly horrific thing, but in reality they are using a heavily watered down "technical" definition that wouldn't summon the same moral outrage. And they're counting on the average man to not investigate and realize they are being gamed. It's one of the most dishonest bad faith ways of arguing imaginable - but then antizionism is a racist hate movement bent on genocide.

This is a video before the formal declaration of the results where the candidates are first told of the result, sadly my Labour opponent didn’t bother turning up and refused to congratulate me. I still want to thank him for his service these past four years and wish him well for the future. Now we turn the page.

@RichardEngel There’s also no P for “Palestine” in Arabic - the truth is that it was named by the Romans “Syria-Palaestina” in order to downplay the Jewish ancestral connection to the land that today goes back over 3,000 years.

@Covenant_watch well according to ibn abi usaiba, hanayn ibn ishaq could recite homer from memory. granted, not Muslim, but still indicative of some culture of homeric appreciation. Most translated homeric quoted passages were in philosophy/science works afaik, not adab

@ajaltamimi Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq was reported to have been able to recite Homer from memory, and Theophilus of Edessa translated the Iliad into Syriac for the caliph Al-Mahdī. It seems that, at least in 8th/9th century Baghdad, there were people reading Homer.

@sandylanceley @s8mb @edwest prominent Muslims who do 'separate their faith and politics' are subject to all the same abuse though, e.g. Sadiq Khan being called an extremist non-stop (similar to Zohran in the US)

@s8mb @edwest Europe hasn’t yet properly reckoned with the illiberalism of Islam. It is, in my view, the biggest threat to liberalism. Way too many Muslims are unable to separate their faith from their politics, and the results of that could be extremely negative as Islam grows.

@asabbas98 @ThePillarsApp You already show the day's progression very neatly in the graphic at the top – integrate previous/following Hijri date into that. So most prominent number user sees is the current Hijri date, but you can see what date is coming up after maghreb

Salaam folks, I need your input for @ThePillarsApp We've been trying to figure out the best way to present the Hijri calendar in our app ... especially with Ramadan coming up. Basically we have TWO options: #1 - BOTH Hijri Dates for the Day e.g. today is 28th January ... which means it's 9th Sha'ban until Maghrib ... then it switches to 10th Sha'ban. Therefore, we'd show BOTH dates and underline which one it is CURRENTLY (see image 1) #2 - ONE (Dynamic) Hijri Date We'll show you ONLY ONE Hijri date depending on if it's before / after Maghrib. e.g. before Maghrib you will see 9th Sha'ban. After Maghrib you will see 10th Sha'ban ... but we don't show both. It's MUCH cleaner (without both dates & the underline) .... but it's limited data and could be confusing (e.g. you're fasting on 22nd Ramadan but Taraweeh that night will be for 23rd Ramadan ... but looking at Pillars it'll say 22nd (correctly so) What do you think? This statement by the US’s Tom Barrack is dependant on both sides being able to persuade their loyalists to abide by this. Given the scale of forced capitulation by Kurdish-led SDF and the extremists among the interim Govt loyalists, this is far from guaranteed 🧵
Ambassador Tom Barrack@USAMBTurkiye

The United States commends the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for their constructive efforts in reaching today’s ceasefire agreement, paving the way for renewed dialogue and cooperation toward a unified Syria. Two great Syrian leaders, driven by the shared vision of liberating their country and people from tyranny, have now come together to forge a brighter future for all Syrians. This agreement and ceasefire represent a pivotal inflection point, where former adversaries embrace partnership over division. President al-Sharaa has affirmed that the Kurds are an integral part of Syria, and the United States looks forward to the seamless integration of our historic partner in the fight against ISIS with the Global Coalition’s newest member, as we press forward in the enduring battle against terrorism. The challenging work of finalizing the details of a comprehensive integration agreement begins now, and the United States stands firmly behind this process at every stage—as we safeguard our vital national security interests in defeating ISIS remnants and advance President Trump’s bold Middle East Peace Plan. The United States is particularly encouraged by this sustained drive to counter ISIS threats, which will facilitate our long-term Kurdish partners’ full onboarding into a united, inclusive Syria that safeguards the interests and rights of all its citizens—while advancing shared goals of reconciliation and national unity by merging the distinct lanes of interest into one cohesive path forward.

@Platinumshuu @Prostenjoyer if we're only comparing the championship seasons, it probably goes 1. Rosberg 2. Kimi 3. Norris 4. Button across their whole careers (granted we haven't seen all of Norris' career yet) 1. Button 2. Rosberg 3. Norris 4. Kimi because Kimi spent too long messing around in Lotus

Button I tend to agree, because the gaps Hamilton put on him simply shouldn’t have happened to a champion in his prime. But Vettel and Rosberg? Not a chance. I do think Norris has a higher ceiling and we’ve seen that. But Rosberg was up against Hamilton when Hamilton was an absolute monster. Same logic applies to Vettel, etc. I agree also on the “not generational” but he’s damn fast and surely a worthy champion.

Now the dust has settled, take the last 5 WDCs before Norris, so Max, Lewis, Rosberg, Seb & Jenson. Only Hamilton and Max clear Norris easily. Vettel has a solid argument too, but Norris would manhandle Rosberg and Button any day Lando’s not generational but not a bad champ tbh
