Today, we are celebrating George Mason, who authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the first official American document to state that all people are equally free, that the government derives its power from the people, and that people have certain inalienable rights. Mason's language inspired Jefferson's drafting of the Declaration, and Madison included it in the Bill of Rights. His words formed the basis of our government and enshrined the principles of equality and self-governance that our Nation was built on.
