For two and a half months, the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security have served our country with unwavering dedication, without a consistent paycheck or proper funding.
This shutdown was not inevitable. At the start of the year, appropriators on both sides of the aisle reached a responsible funding agreement for DHS. However, Democrats walked away from that deal, forced this harmful shutdown, and insisted on maintaining it for months despite threats to our national security, federal workers' paychecks, and the President's life.
This week, House Republicans took decisive action, employing a twin-track approach, to restore funding to the majority of DHS, including TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard, while also laying the groundwork to fund Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While this shutdown was incredibly disruptive, I am proud to finally put an end to this chaos. As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, ensuring the communities of Northeast Ohio and our nation are protected is my top priority.
