The reported decision by ICE to pause vehicle stops is a good first step. At least 22 people have been fired on by agents involved in Trump’s mass deportation plans, and six people, including three American citizens, have been killed in those shootings. The murders of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston last week and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford yesterday were preventable tragedies. There are additional changes that must be made immediately to safeguard communities: the use of body cameras, independent investigations into the shootings, and accountability that will bring justice for the families who lost their loved ones.

There must be an independent investigation into both these shootings; agents must wear & turn on their body cameras; and there must be accountability for these killings. My heart is with the families and loved ones of these two fathers and the communities living with the tragedy.

The Supreme Court’s shadow docket ruling allows ICE to use race, language, ethnicity, and more to conduct stops, endangering the lives of brown and black people. We know Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and the yet to be identified man killed today weren't targets, but they were Latino.

Two men in one week have been killed by ICE agents empowered by a radical Supreme Court intent on rolling back civil rights. Neither man was the target, making it likely that racial profiling ("Kavanaugh stops") played a role in both fatal shootings in Houston and Biddeford. 🧵

Not only is slashing nearly $200 billion for SNAP cruel, we're missing out on the economic benefits. Studies show that for every dollar invested in SNAP, $1.54 is generated for the economy. Republicans are making people go hungry and our economy miss out on over $300 billion.

I am aware of the fatal shooting that occurred during an ICE enforcement operation in my district in the Magnolia Park neighborhood this morning. ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force. All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation. The victim’s family, my constituents, and the entire community deserve a complete and transparent accounting of what happened.

The Trump Administration's decision to withhold funding for unaccompanied minors has placed that mission in jeopardy, created unnecessary uncertainty for the people who depend on it, and deliberately attacked due process.

Estrella del Paso has been a lifeline for immigrant families in our community, providing the legal support that makes our justice system fairer and more accessible.

It's a tragedy that Trump's sycophants apparently spent months at the NMAH and walked away more close-minded. They've completely missed the purpose of the museum and have chosen to instead to try and enrage the American people as an excuse to rewrite history.

We need to defend our institutions, as @TimothyDSnyder has been arguing for years. This means defending the values that should inform them, not just following along with whatever happens.
