Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have done nothing but drive up costs for Michigan workers and lose our state thousands of jobs. This visit is more of the same—empty rhetoric and political stunts, not meaningful action to improve lives. Michiganders know the difference. I’ve visited nearly 200 manufacturing plants across Michigan. I’ve been on the shop floors with workers, listening to their challenges and working to bring jobs back and strengthen our supply chains. That’s what doing the work actually looks like.

In Michigan, we write our own story. We will not be defined by one act of extremism.

Our worst fears came to West Bloomfield today. To the congregants of Temple Israel and Jewish families across our community and beyond, we stand with you in horror of the reality that Jewish Americans confront every time they enter a place of worship, attend a community event, or gather with loved ones. Michiganders’ lives were saved today by the heroism of security officials on site and the speed of Oakland County’s first responders. Thanks to their bravery and quick actions, Temple Israel’s congregants, staff, and students are alive and safe tonight in their homes. Our community forever owes a debt to the men and women who kept this synagogue safe, and we all send our prayers to the wounded security guard who is recovering in the hospital. It should not be like this. Jewish families should never have to fear gathering at a synagogue, sending their children to religious school, or simply practicing their faith. Americans should not have to be surrounded by armed guards every time they pray. It is no longer enough for our leaders to condemn antisemitism. It must be rooted out everywhere. There are things Congress can and must do legislatively—first and foremost, funding every effort we can to keep the Jewish community safe and protect houses of worship—but we must also commit to ending the scourge of antisemitism in every community. Enough is enough. The congregants of Temple Israel deserve better.

Before our very eyes, a Temple in West Bloomfield is under attack. Like many of you, I am getting reports in real time. To everyone in Michigan’s 11th district, continue to follow the guidance of local law enforcement. To the Jewish American community in Michigan and beyond, we stand with you.

While hardworking Michigan families struggle to afford higher electricity bills, corporate executives are getting richer off their backs. That is unacceptable.

No more getting rich in Congress. Our leaders should be focused on serving their communities, not their stock portfolios.

My dad was a public school teacher. I know teachers are the backbone of our education system. It was great to bring together local educators, school leaders, and union representatives in Farmington yesterday to talk about my bill to address growing teacher shortages across the country.

Rather than listen to warnings from top economists, pleas from Michigan families, and orders from the Supreme Court, Donald Trump is doubling down and working to force more pain on Americans at the pump, at the checkout counter, and at the dealership. I will keep fighting to lower costs, end Trump’s painful tariffs, and create more opportunities for Michiganders to get good-paying jobs.

Under Kristi Noem, ICE killed Americans, used children as bait to detain their parents, lied to Congress, and terrorized our neighborhoods. She should have been fired a long time ago. We still must address the chaos and lawlessness Donald Trump’s ICE has unleashed across our country. Before the Senate considers any replacement, the American people demand serious reforms at ICE that will keep people safe. I won’t stop fighting for a complete overhaul that focuses on transparency, accountability, getting the facts of what’s unfolding at the detention facility in Baldwin, and keeping Michiganders safe.
