Yesterday, I had a detailed call with Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., @MarkDWiseman. I stressed to him, on behalf of millions of concerned Americans, just how extremely important and urgent it is to put out all the fires harming U.S. air quality. Going forward, it will be so vital to maximize proactive forest management, early fire detection, and resource staging and instant mobilization. I am praying for a swift and full recovery for the Kalamazoo Sheriff Deputy who was shot this morning. Thank you to area law enforcement for apprehending the suspect who stole the deputy’s vehicle. Canada's inability to mitigate, contain, and prevent its wildfires must be addressed. These annual fires significantly harm not only our health and quality of life, but also our economic prosperity. I have discussed this situation with our Ambassador in Ottawa, Peter Hoekstra, and have personally reached out to Canadian government officials. I call on the Canadian Government to fully and regularly inform appropriate US agencies such as the EPA as to the status and mitigation action plan regarding the fires. I also encourage Canada to work with the US government to find concrete solutions to address their ongoing wildfire problems. Michiganders must stop paying the price for bad policy.

WATCH: @RepHuizenga on how the CFPB is working to encourage a supervisory culture that rewards self-identification, self-correction, and good faith cooperation: “An effective regulatory system should motivate entities to detect and fix issues. … While working with regulators to prevent consumer harm, institutions are more likely to invest in compliance and even, frankly, self-report violations if cooperation is rewarded and not penalized. … Some stakeholders have argued that CFPB’s approach lacks incentives for self-reporting, which may actually reduce transparency and slow corrective actions. And I think, frankly, major reforms are needed. For that reason, I've introduced the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection Commission Act to reform the CFPB’s structure from a single director to a bipartisan commission of five members, making it more accountable, consistent, transparent, and trustworthy. 📺⬇️

I'm reminded of actually a hearing we had where we had then-Secretary Yellen, former Fed Chair Yellen, sitting next to the then-current Fed Chairman, and when I brought up the question about whether it was transitory, they did not have the same answer. What in the world is a “friendship garden” and why does a major Dutch semiconductor company have one with a Chinese chip maker? The Bureau of Industry and Security needs to hold our allies accountable. It should be America first, not America last! Our allies should not be selling critical technologies to China!
