This morning I was notified of another death in ICE custody — the 48th death since Trump returned to office. There must be urgent accountability and oversight, and Congress must take action to dismantle ICE and CBP.

Only a 43-day extension. Not a reauthorization. Complete incompetence. I voted no because we need real warrant reforms that the majority of us on both sides want instead of just extending with no reforms. I promise another extension will NOT get through on suspension. It took me 17 years and an alphabet soup of visas to become a U.S. citizen. And in Congress, I’ll continue working to protect and expand legal pathways to citizenship, including for TPS holders.

The Senate passed this bill, to fund everything in DHS besides ICE and CBP, a month ago. There is no reason that this solution to fully fund TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard should have been so delayed by Speaker Johnson.

I asked our witnesses at today’s hearing what they would say to Americans who have fallen victim to anti-immigrant rhetoric. Listen to their responses:

The Farm Bill is an opportunity to help farmers and working families. Instead, Republicans are using it to make permanent cuts to food assistance, meaning millions of children will lose access. This bill is a betrayal. My full statement:

Instead of stripping TPS holders of legal status, we should provide them with a path to long-term stability. Last Congress, Democrats passed the American Dream and Promise Act to give TPS holders a pathway to citizenship. We must continue to fight for this legislation and for TPS holders.

TPS holders are one of the most vetted groups of immigrants in the US. They have followed our laws, paid taxes, integrated into our communities, and contributed to our economy. Trump’s attacks on them have no basis.

Trump’s mass deportation campaign has never been about going after the “worst of the worst.” He wants to criminalize ALL immigration. Today, I am hosting a hearing to call out his attacks on TPS and how it is hurting our communities.
