Last session, I proudly passed the Tennessee Retirement Savings Plan Act, which will strengthen the federal Trump Accounts program, and allow our state to act as a custodian of such funds. This law will equip us to protect our state’s future.

National Police Week is a time to recognize those who put on a badge and answer the call. We honor their sacrifice, respect their service, and commit to supporting them and their families.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I want to honor the strong women and who are the foundation of our family. My sister, Diane; my daughter, Bonny; my wife, Kathy; and my mother, Peggy, who is watching over all of us in heaven. May God Bless all our Mother’s today and always.

We are advancing innovative solutions for cancer patients in Tennessee. In the future, Tennesseans will have access to biomarker technology that will make it quicker and easier to catch cancer before it’s too late. We are also expanding step therapy exemptions across the state.

Behind every cancer survivor is research. Tennessee invests in the scientists and facilities, like Memphis’s very own St. Jude’s Children's Hospital, in advancing treatment and cure. This month we celebrate progress and renewed commitment.

I am deeply saddened over the passing of my friend, Representative G.A. Hardaway. We were friends long before we were State Representatives. We would share our thoughts for a stronger Memphis, and he cared about our Memphis schools. His loss as a Tennessee leader will be missed.

We’re done! The 114th Session of the General Assembly has adjourned, and we are finally heading home to be with the people we represent. It is an honor to serve.

Governor to appoint the MSCS Local Intervention Conference Committee. This will be the final step toward passage so we can finally fix our failing school system after decades of poor management and outcomes. When I launched #MakeMemphisMatter, my goal was to tackle crime and solve our education crisis. Thanks to the Memphis Safe Task Force, crime has been cut in half. Now it’s time to fix education. HB 2428 will impose a MINIMUM fine of $10,000, and a MINIMUM of 60 days behind bars, for assaulting a first responder. It will also make this crime a felony. In Tennessee, we respect the law, and we will fight to protect those who enforce it.
