What I saw today in Newark is a scene I never imagined experiencing in my lifetime. But I refuse to believe today reflects who we are as a country. We must all commit to correcting the course our country is on. Standing side by side, I know we can achieve those better tomorrows - together.

I promised Martin’s wife that I wouldn’t leave until I found him. After 18 straight hours on the ground, first at Delaney Hall and now at EDC, we finally got to see and speak with Martin. Our work here isn't done. The fight continues. And we will never relent until all private detention centers are closed and ICE is abolished.

We spent all night at Delaney Hall and I’m grateful to @GovSherrillNJ, @SenatorAndyKim, and our NJ colleagues for continuing the fight this morning. We will not stop until we get answers for the families and loved ones of those inside.

Last night I arrived at Delaney Hall to conduct an unannounced oversight visit after hearing a constituent was facing potential transfer or deportation for his role in the recent strike. I was denied entry, but I have remained on-site throughout the night. I was told that I would be able to go inside at 8am, but ICE continues to deny entry. I will provide updates soon. Thank you to all the families and volunteers who have stood in solidarity throughout the night.

A new Brookings report shows over 145,000 U.S. citizen children have had a parent taken into detention since Trump took office. No one is safe in Trump's America—not even our children. We conducted a surprise oversight visit at Delaney Hall with @RepLaMonica and @RepAnalilia after receiving a letter signed by nearly 300 people inside about the abhorrent conditions. What we saw confirms the worst: absolutely nothing has changed since our first visit to DH over a year ago. In fact, it's only getting worse. DH needs to be shut down - now.

First, DHS claimed they didn’t know where Adriana was. Now, they say they can’t bring her back because of the Ebola outbreak in the DRC (a crisis the Trump Admin exacerbated by cutting USAID funding). There are zero reported Ebola cases in Kinshasa where Adriana is currently being held. Deeply saddened to hear news of a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire community. No one should ever feel unsafe in a place of worship or learning. We must remain absolutely unyielding in our fight against Islamophobia anywhere and everywhere it exists.

The Trump Administration is taking people in our communities with protected status and sending them to countries that cannot support them. We will fight this Administration every step of the way.
