It's fascinating that only a democracy is interested in collecting these things from their people. I know dictators collect some of these, but democracies want all or nothing.

The 1913 income tax was definitely intended and presented as a permanent change in America. Our stupid ancestors really wanted it. Assholes. In Britain on the other hand, it was temporary, but then it came back and remained permanent.

@9Kings1910Alt I get a little sad when I think about how I wouldn't want to switch places with the members of the Royal Family. Charles's marriage troubles, William and Harry lost their mom young, etc. My life is so much better than theirs. It's not fair.

I do not envy the most famous royals at all. However I’ll admit there’s a part of me that likes the idea of being the sort of quasi-royal person who people who are really into royal genealogy would know about but most people wouldn’t.

Almost everyone on earth recognises the classic red British phone box. But almost no one has seen the original. The K1 was introduced in 1921, and it looked nothing like what we think of today. It wasn’t red. And it was made of concrete. It marked the first attempt to standardise public telephone kiosks across Britain. But it didn’t capture the public imagination. That changed in 1924, when a competition led to the creation of the iconic K2, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. From that point on, the red phone box became a symbol of Britain itself.
