Benn Eifert's fund was mostly down in January, so any speculation of market-directional views is just naive (plus what do I know about non delta-ones?). And it is rather sad most of HFs blowup will never be written about unless it matters to systematic financial safety like LTCM.

Bull market or skill, or both, it’s not a different game if you just start with $10k or even $1 million. One point is that you could do this simply with mega caps. It’s not like nobody knew say Tesla, Nvidia or Micron, to name but a few recent ones. They were all leaders in their sector. And many more megacaps did this, after becoming the market leader in their sector.

You only need three 10-baggers in order to go from $1 million to $1 billion.
$1m to $10m
$10m to $100m
$100m to $1bn
If you’re starting with $10k, you only need five.

There’s not a lot of value to analoging something like 2020 unless there’s an exogenous event lurking that the market just hasn’t priced in yet
Would genuinely have to be something in the level of a pandemic though
