Did you know that in Kenya, adolescents in consensual sexual relationships being subjected to criminal prosecutions? Criminalizing adolescence does not protect young people it pushes them away from care, information, and support. Adolescents are rights holders. They deserve protection, dignity, and access to youth friendly reproductive health services not punishment.

When asked about Georgia’s extreme abortion ban—which makes care nearly impossible to access after 6 weeks—"Sinners" star Michael B. Jordan pointed to a bigger question: what support do families actually receive after forced birth? Before the Oscars, watch this 2019 clip:

In Nigeria, a superior court made history. For the first time, it recognized that a pregnancy resulting from rape or sexual violence is a violation of a woman's physical and mental health and that survivors have the legal right to decide whether or not to continue that pregnancy. These are not small wins. These are courts on the continent drawing a line and saying: women's lives matter. Their autonomy matters. Their rights are real and enforceable. On #IWD2026, we celebrate these wins and we urge governments to translate them into policy, funding, and services that reach every woman who needs them.

The system that imprisoned Violet Zulu has not changed. The fees are still there. The information gaps are still there. The criminalization of poverty is still there. Justice for Violet means justice for every woman in her position. Governments must act.

We joined SIHA Network and the SOAWR Coalition for the project launch of “Advancing Bodily Autonomy & Integrity: Making the Maputo Protocol a Reality in Africa.” The project pushes for stronger domestication of the Protocol, lifting Article 14 reservations and advancing #SRHR.

Our ED @Primahk joined a #CSW side event panel on Access to Justice as a tool to advance SRHRJ and bodily autonomy. Laws alone do not guarantee rights, access to justice does. Women must be able to claim their SRHR, bodily autonomy, and dignity through responsive legal systems.

The Center for Reproductive Rights co-convened a panel through the CATALYSTS Consortium examining African legal instruments on the right to abortion. @sallah_njie (Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa) delivered a keynote urging states to actively engage with ACHPR processes, including complementary reporting, and to lift reservations to the Maputo Protocol while fulfilling their obligations to respect and realize SRHR. The discussion highlighted comparative legal advocacy strategies advancing safe abortion across the region. @WanjiruKamanda Senior Advocacy Advisor Africa, moderated perspectives from the DRC, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea on measures taken to implement Article 14(2) of the Maputo Protocol. @ValNjogu ,Legal Advocacy Advisor Africa, also reflected on the Center’s litigation and engagement with regional mechanisms and treaty bodies to strengthen legal protections and address administrative barriers limiting access to sexual and reproductive health services for women and girls. #CSW70 #WomensRights #ReproductiveRights

@RosemaryKirui Legal Adviser, Center for Reproductive Rights Africa. Africa has a strong regional legal framework. The challenge is domestication and implementation. Rosemary brought it home through the case of Violet Zulu, a mother of two imprisoned for procuring an abortion, later acquitted. Her acquittal sends a powerful message: criminalizing access to reproductive health is unjust. Her call to action: adopt standards aligned with legal norms. Challenge structural barriers. Seek accountability.

Deogratias Bwire, Director of Empowerment and Human Rights Response @humanrightstz. Bwire spoke on obstetric violence and SRHR in Tanzania and the power of collaborative litigation and advocacy and what genuine partnership with the @ReproRightsAFR makes possible. When advocates and courts work together, courts are better equipped to understand the legal and lived context. That's how rights move from paper to practice. #CSW70 #Tanzania #ReproductiveRights #SRHR

🧵 THREAD | Today at our #CSW70 side event, the panelist (experts) from across Africa brought the evidence, the cases, and the call to act. Here's what was said. 👇 In 2025, Rwanda's Law Regulating Health Services lowered the age of accessing reproductive health services from 18 to 15. Passing the law is only step one said Dr. Kagaba, Executive Director, @HDIRwanda. He urged governments to follow through: tackle stigma and ensure services are youth-friendly and truly accessible. #CSW70 #Rwanda #AccessToJustice #SRHR
