@ResilientGrower Unfortunately I live in Canada and it’s terribly cold & will be for quite awhile still. I only have 1 small raised herb garden, the soil in my yard isn’t really considered safe for planting food, due to possible lingering effects from a nuclear plant, what is your advice for me?

If you start potatoes, winter squash, onions, carrots, beets, turnips, and cabbages today (I know, the moon isn't just right for root crops, but what are you gonna do?), you'll potentially have piles of storage crops in about 3-4 months. Sounds like a clever plan.

It's a beautiful location, of course, but... Now show that same location mid Winter, and you and your family are totally dependent on one another and the closest neighbors for food, medical issues, etc. all while buried in many feet of snow. I am no fan of cities and I live in the country, yet there are always trade offs.

Thank you. I’ve started 10’s of thousands of seeds with this set-up, and it has proven itself. It also lends itself to winter squash storage. Remove the heat pads and lights, put them on top, and load the shelves with squash. Plenty of airflow, easy to monitor for any mold, and easy to access.

Agreed, that’s why I referenced the moon in the less than optimal position for root planting. I’ve been following a biodynamic planting calendar for years, and it certainly makes a difference in all aspects of the plants life. And, like our friends at Stella Natura would say, sometimes the timing doesn’t work out optimally. At that point, I have faith in life and its desire to participate.

@ResilientGrower Today is a root day. Cabbage is not a root, yesterday was a do nothing day.

@Ferng6Ferng Absolutely. There’s a reason I focused on storage crops for this post, and not cool weather crops (kales, lettuces, radishes, etc.) Storable calories must always be a priority.

I’m sorry to hear about your soil contamination. That’s truly awful. There’s hope! You can plant in large pots, or lay down geotex cloth and build raised beds on top. Make them of cheap 2x6’s, stacked up to 4 boards (on edge, so your bed will be 22” deep). Use 4x4’s for the corners, and attach with torx screws. Fill with organic garden soil, perhaps amend with whatever the soil is lacking (kelp meal, fish bone meal, composted manure from a trusted source). Start your seeds indoors. I’ll repost a relatively inexpensive and very efficient germination/start chamber that can be assembled easily in a weekend, with all parts available at big box building suppliers. Check back tomorrow for more, and thanks for the question.

I'm at 49ºN, so all of my early crops are still inside, potatoes will go into the gardens in about 2 weeks, carrots and beets will be direct seeded also around that time. Winter squash will be seeded in about 3-4 weeks indoors, then planted out after 3 weeks. Location dependent. It was 22º this morning.

It’s almost like we shouldn’t be basing the nation’s food supply on chemical inputs that are highly susceptible to geopolitics

I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're all in need of a reminder of the beauty of our world. This is my contribution. May all your calves be this healthy and adorable. Wishing you all a blessed evening.

With all the crazy news lately it would be easy to miss the fact that the Trump DOJ/ATF just filed a document in court last week using flowery lawyer language to say "we still think guns with pistol braces on them are legally SBRs and we will prosecute Americans who own them and put them in prison for 10 years per offense." Yes, I know they lost the "brace rule" legal battle and I've made multiple videos on it since 2023 but that doesn't seem to be a concern to them. Plan accordingly (buy all the braced pistols you want 🦅)... #brace #AR15 #AR9 #PCC #2nd #2a
