@MTSavill @RUSI_org Yes, we noted CDS's comments in December, as well as Al Carns' comment that it 'will' happen. Various ministers and officials have given both versions over past months, usually while reiterating SDR/NSS, suggesting that it isn't, or no one/dept owns it. x.com/RethinkingSecu…

Good that @jcartlidgemp is pursuing the government on its SDR pledge to pursue a national conversation on defence and security. But no suggestion here that MoD has any plans for this to be a two-way conversation with the public or listening exercise. PQ: questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questi…

Except that when CDS spoke at @RUSI_org for the Annual Lecture, it was explicitly stated this was 'part' of that conversation. gov.uk/government/spe…

Very useful PQ from @TanDhesi on the 'national conversation on defence and security' supposedly underway post-SDR, 9 months ago. @LukePollard's response suggests it: a) hasn't officially started yet ('...will be'); b) aims to 'embed' HMG position rather than listen to the public.

A genuine national conversation on defence & security is more vital now than ever. But it can't be top down; it needs to listen. And it should have happened before or during the 2024-25 reviews, not after. SDR was better than the NSS (zero public engagement) but not much better.

Follow @LakenheathAfP for updates on the flow of US warplanes through RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath, and other bases in East Anglia. British bases being used for the ongoing illegal attacks on Iran.
LakenheathAllianceForPeace@LakenheathAfP

A quick 'RAF' Mildenhall update. 12/13 MC-130J Special Operations attack aircraft. A couple of C17 transport planes and 12 KC-135 refuelling planes. These are visitors and does not include the planes usually based at RAF Mildenhall.

🚨New article: With the UK yet again getting sucked into a major war in the Middle East, @RJ_Reeve examines how London’s structural dependence + delusions of status and influence condemn it to repeating past mistakes and exacerbating crises. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇮🇱🇮🇷 rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2026/03/09/pup…

Some good letters in the Guardian today pushing back on the MoD's narrative campaign of imminent war and UK government's disingenuous suggestion that it is trying to conduct a national or European conversation on security, including from our @RJ_Reeve. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

I’m pleased to have a letter published in the Guardian in response to the CDS’s assertion that weakness invites aggression, and the government’s dialogue of the deaf on preparing society for war. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

There's so much of our Great British Polycrisis that an "honest, continent-wide conversation with the public" could be covering. Instead we have a post-MSC barrage of influence operations, occluding any element of conversation, the public or honesty. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The fact that European security elites cannot think/talk/plan about more than one🇷🇺 or two🇺🇸 security issues at a time demonstrates how unfit to deal with an era of enduring polycrisis the current system is.

At the Munich Security Conference this weekend – long a barometer for global security priorities – climate change was largely absent. Recent global climate trends offer a warning. chathamhouse.org/2026/02/climat…

🚨New on the Blog: The UK military still recruits children, despite ethical considerations, higher costs, lower outcomes of training, and the inability to deploy under-18s operationally. @JimWyke makes the case for a more efficient all-adult military. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2026/02/13/ben…

Massive victory as court rules that Palestine Action proscription ruled disproportionate and resulted in a very significant interference in the right to freedom of speech and assembly. BUT proscription remains in force until hearing on 20th!

Graft. Venality. Impunity. Our 2023 public opinion survey identified Corruption & Actions of the UK Gov't as the top 2 threats to UK national security. Of 16-30 yr-olds, 74% rated Corruption, and 68% rated UK Gov't action, as a significant threat. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2024/06/20/h...
