@Yankeelibrarian If Bernie came up five years later and retired five years later, they’d be called the Fab Five. But he was already well established when the others were coming up, and he d already been on HOF ballots when the others were winding up their careers, so it’s the Core Four.

The term “core four” needs to be retired. Bernie Williams was the best hitter of those Yankees championship years, and it’s not close, so why do we keep using it? Seeing it thrown around on Old Timer’s Day as much as it was just came off as a lazy way to tribute a great time in this team’s history. It’s an objective fact that without Bernie, they don’t win as much as they do. Between 1996 and 2000, among players with a minimum of 1,000 PA, Bernie leads the Yankees in AVG (.324), OBP (.410), SLG (.551), wRC+ (145), and fWAR (23.6). To put into context how ridiculous Bernie was then, his .960 OPS blew away the second and third-highest OPS on the team by over .100. Derek Jeter was second with a .865 OPS, and Paul O’Neill was third with a .850 OPS. If you want to lower the minimum PA to .500, he’s still the highest by a wide margin because it puts Darryl Strawberry at second with a .871 OPS. All of this is even before we account for his postseason track record. Overall Bernie hit .275/.371/.480 in October.

@B2BSeth @GaryHPhillips Torres should be in there every day. IKF can move to the outfield in a pinch. Volpe has warmed up the last couple of months but he could use a rest every now and then. Judge is playing hurt, no need to run him out there every day. Apart from that, it's all deadwood.

@GaryHPhillips Only issue I see with playing them every day is sitting guys who are actually hitting in the bigs. Pereira should be no prob, kid should've been up a month ago. Peraza had time up, was hard to play him. IF is a bit clogged. IKF is the utility guy but he's been hitting. will see.

The press release for this bonded #bourbon confused the hell out of me & led me to ask a question I thought I knew the answer to. Turns out I DID know the answer & just misinterpreted the press release. Read about the bourbon in question right here! tonysachsdrinks.com/what-im-writin…

@subwaysquawkers @cmaguire2008 Agreed. I’ll never stop loving and rooting for the Yankees regardless of front-office competence, but they have to earn my money.

@cmaguire2008 Do you keep on patronizing a restaurant that gives you food poisoning each time? A bar where they water down the drinks and overcharge you? No? I guess that makes you a bandwagon fan of these places. /Sarcasm

I want to get in a time machine and go back to 1990 and tell my @Yankees-loving, Steinbrenner-hating younger self, “This may sound crazy, but one day you’re gonna be pissed because they don’t fire people quickly enough!”

@B2BSeth @BryanHoch Still not the right move. He’s one of the only guys on the team not stinking up the joint with his bat. Let him swing away.

@YankeesFiles @JAGNY_1987 @ZacheryGoldste4 The Yankees also had the most wins of any MLB team in the '80s — the first decade since the 1910s that they didn't win a World Series. History does not remember that as a wildly successful decade for the franchise.

Of course they are! But when comparing to the dodgers, the “championship or bust” framework goes out the window, because the dodgers have 1 ring in the last three and a half decades. So it must be the case that “number of rings” is NOT the supreme metric for evaluating an FO’s success.

Hey boozy Twitter (or whatever this thing is called today) - can a #bottledinbond #whiskey contain whiskeys distilled in two or more distilling seasons that were barreled separately and then married prior to bottling?

@DavidWondrich Just clarified — it's two different seasons, bottled separately and labeled in accordance with regulations, but released at the same time. Thought I'd been missing something all these years!

@DavidWondrich I didn’t think so. There’s a B-in-B that seems to come from two different seasons but they must have been bottled separately and released as one batch, not blended.

@B2BSeth It's the incompetence paired with the inaction, and the seeming disregard for what the fans want. The Mets' record is even worse than the Yanks', but I love that Steve Cohen is a fan as well as a deep-pocketed owner, and acts like it. Hal's a bean counter.

@B2BSeth @JonFromMaspeth Big guy, it really is OK to love a team and at the same time intensely dislike the people who own and run the team. We don’t have to support them just because they’re being paid by an organization we root for. They’ve done a bad job and the proof is on the field every night.

@B2BSeth @ThurmonMunson15 Totally agree that we as fans don’t know the half of what goes on behind the scenes. BUT we can certainly glean a whole lot based on intel from the reporters who cover the team. And if you’re inferring we should give Cash/Hal the benefit of the doubt… 60-61 speaks for itself.

@ThurmonMunson15 when we are only given, as fans, as the public, a slice of the fabric of a nuanced conversation(such as trade talks) and we attempt to make a full quit out of it, it's not going to work. Social media is not a full recipe, just an ingredient you can choose not to even use

Jomboy said it right (and I’m going to butcher it)… the Yankees always SAY the asking price for any good trade is too high… then either the prospect they are protecting doesn’t pan out, or we never see them. That excuse is total nonsense. Not a single prospect has panned out.
