Somebody continues to use my name to alert problematic journals and papers. Now the comment was left on the Scimago website. I've learned about it because the journal contacted me and asked to temporarily delete the comment. Really? What's going on? scimagojr.com/journalsearch.…

@nickwizzo @MDPIOpenAccess @ElsevierConnect Gotcha. And yes - that seems like a minimum process to ensure integrity (and not particularly burdensome, either).

@Retropz @MDPIOpenAccess @ElsevierConnect I could have been clearer, I meant why is it possible for authors to be added by the authors themselves in the system. They should have to ask permission, explain their reasoning, and then the authors be added by the editor or journal.

A recent article in @RetractionWatch reported on an author finding a plagiarised version of their paper published in an @ElsevierConnect journal. I have the advert selling authorship of that paper, and a dozen others. 🧵 retractionwatch.com/2024/07/04/els… forbetterscience.com/2024/09/02/any…

@nickwizzo @MDPIOpenAccess @ElsevierConnect In each case, I think all the authors received a notification of the changes to authorship, and all had to sign off on them - so there was some sort of process. Understanding more of the issues with authorship now I would certainly advocate for even stricter processes

@nickwizzo @MDPIOpenAccess @ElsevierConnect Definitely agree that there should be very stringent oversight in terms of adding authors. But in terms of doing it, I've added authors (and been added a couple of times) during revisions to manuscripts which needed new experiments or additional methods/approaches

@westwoodsam1 @deevybee Seconding the great recommendations so far. Also the REAPPRAISED checklist has lots of things to look out for - nature.com/articles/d4158… I also recommend the @PubPeer plugin for browsers, and using a reference manager that checks the @RetractionWatch database

Any useful resources on how to critically read a science paper? Something spicy/unconventional, like red flags to spot, "scratch and sniff" tests (eg statcheck), peer review sites (eg pubpeer), hot spots to read first (eg CoIs/tables/methods/clinicaltrials.gov), etc.

@deevybee They say "the customer is always right", and here the 'customer' is the author. All the many opportunities to revise, adapt, resubmit etc make sense if viewed from a business perspective rather than a scientific one. Even the rapid speed of process is customer-focused
