After watching the San Diego shooting livestream of such an unthinkable act, it makes me wonder how someone so young can become so deeply radicalized. As a mother of sons aged 22 and 19, I know young adults can make reckless decisions and only later do parents sometimes learn the full extent of their behavior, but crossing into outright criminal violence is something I struggle to comprehend. It also makes me think about whether parents today are losing visibility into their children’s lives, including what they are exposed to, who influences them, and whether anyone is actively paying attention to their mental and emotional state. They hated almost everyone so this did not happen overnight. There must have been warning signs along the way. I understand that parents are busy working, but I cannot understand how such a significant disconnect could develop between them and their sons.
