The left and its idea of beauty. I am not going to insult Obama supporters 🤣🤣😎 for something Obama did. Let us simply pause and examine the thinking behind his monument and whether there is any coherent aesthetic idea at work there at all. The left of yesteryear had great writers, architects, artists and critics. They were often the fountain of culture, or at least one of its great tributaries. They understood form, proportion, symbolism and the moral seriousness of beauty. Their politics was always disputable, but their taste often was not. Take Trotsky and Oscar Niemeyer…. What happened? At some point, beauty ceased to be pursued and was replaced by messaging. The result is public art that no longer uplifts, consoles or commands reverence.

Nearly finished a 6mm hobbit/halfling army for playing tomorrow night. Have played with them on Saturday and defeated an orc war band. Everything shoots, everything scoots, I attack by retreating, and defend by retreating... 😆

If you are an Englishman, inside you there are two competing archetypes. The Puritan and the Cavalier. The Puritan: morally upright, stiff upper lip, valuing righteousness and factual correctness above all else. Stern but loving. Bookish. Ascetic, Spartan even. Impeccable manners. Well groomed and not ostentatious. The Cavalier: love of hierarchy and tradition, boisterous, patriotic. Beer and wine swilling, partying. Fondness for gun and blade. Love military history and flashy uniforms. Quick witted. Fun. A dandy - even a cad. Both of these are beautiful in their own way.

Rhodesian troops in the Bush War used a kind of reconaissance by fire known as "Drake shooting". Instead of waiting for the enemy to reveal themselves, troops would proactively shoot into likely hiding spots: bases of trees, rocks, thickets or anthills. The goal was to kill concealed insurgents without first needing a clear visual on them. They didn't waste ammo. Riflemen fired "double taps" or controlled semi-auto shots up to 12 inches off the ground. This targeted legs and feet or ricocheted debris upward into the enemy's face and body. If the enemy flinched, moved, or returned fire, it instantly revealed their position for accurate follow-up shots. This was a very effective counter-insurgent tactic for the terrain they were fighting in.

Another interesting unit from the Rhodesian Bush War - Grey's Scouts. This was a battalion-sized mounted infantry unit. Yes, actual horses still being used in the 1970's. They were actually very useful for long range patrols in the African bush, including when accompanying armoured cars. They didn't do cavalry charges but dismounted to fight on foot. For a nation suffering severe fuel shortages due to international sanctions, this was a logistically efficient, all-terrain alternative to mechanised infantry or recon vehicles.

@TFL1728 Not to be that guy, but the Monroe Doctrine a) had no inherent authority in the early 19th C, and b) to the extent it was enforced, more often than not, it was by the Royal Navy. Otherwise, totally correct.

To remind everyone, in 1833 the British Empire, in direct contravention of the Monroe Doctrine pressed their claim on the Falklands. And when they needed our help in 1982, we were there for them, providing logistical support. Don't think for a second this isn't a message to King Sausage Fingers. Don't think for a second last night's shooting won't be used as an excuse for typical British passive-aggression. Don't think for a second Trump will go easy.

ARGENTINA: Is it a coincidence that the USS Nimitz carrier strike group arrived in Argentinian waters just hours after the US declared its neutrality in the Falkland Islands dispute? President Milei's emergency decree brought the American armada to Argentina for the PASSEX naval exercises. Is Trump sending Starmer a message?

Been working on a big painting project for a couple months. Romans for the 4th Century. We are going to fight the war between Constantius II and Julian (was never fought because Constantius died right at the beginning). @pendraken 10mm. Cav and slingers (in post) left to paint.

I don't think many of my followers are seeing my posts anymore. 😔 The algorithm doesn't seem to promote photographers like it used to a few years ago.. If you see this tweet, of a Robin dropping from a berry laden branch, please can you let me know in the comments. 🙏🐦♥️
