@patapackala @MobyDickSpoiler @PhillyGov @lilbabygandhi I grew up in southern Ontario and have lived in northwestern Ontario for quite some time now. The culture between these areas is completely different even though it is still the same province.

It's not about sovereignty. It's about cultural distinction. I know most of what you know about this country comes from Hollywood, but there actually are a lot of distinct cultures in this country. Hawaii, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, New Mexico, New England, South Florida, Utah, the mountain west, Appalachia. All of these places are pretty culturally distinct. To someone from Pennsylvania, Ontario will feel at least as culturally similar as some of those places. To you, they're all foreign/distinct from Canadian culture. But the real point is that Americans see Canadians as basically "one of us". Trump and his sycophants got on some weird kick, but normal Americans are perfectly happy to acknowledge Canada's sovereignty and its cultural similarity. Canadians are the ones who are confusing culture with independence

I've noticed that even left wing Americans mock Canadian nationhood with the same underlying smarminess as MAGA types. Disgusting, deranged freaks.
