Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has resigned after her party, the Social Democrats, suffered their worst result in a century in Denmark’s general election on Tuesday. Her centre-left bloc failed to secure a majority, taking just 21.9 per cent of the vote. While the Social Democrats remain the largest party in the Folketing, the right-wing bloc also fell short of a majority, leaving coalition talks set to begin. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, leader of the centrist Moderates, is expected to play a key role in negotiations on forming the next government. Frederiksen had called the early election hoping to capitalize on public support after her outspoken criticism of former US President Donald Trump over Greenland. She had aimed to form a centrist coalition and serve a third term. However, official results confirmed that her party, along with her two coalition partners, lost ground compared to the 2022 election. Frederiksen, who has been prime minister since 2019, had previously said: “The world is unsettled. There are strong winds around us. Denmark needs a stable government; a competent government. We are ready to take the lead.” Known for her tough stance on immigration, normally associated with Denmark’s conservative parties, Frederiksen has also championed a large state and high taxes as leader of the Social Democrats. The election was a breakthrough for the right, with the Denmark Democrats nearly tripling their vote share to 9.1 per cent. The Green Left also made gains, leaving the centre-left with insufficient seats to form a majority in the 179-member parliament. Despite the losses, Frederiksen told supporters on election night: “There is nothing today that can make me sad that the Social Democrats have once again become the Danes’ absolute favourite political party.” She added: “I have been responsible for this wonderful country for almost seven years. I am still ready to take on responsibility as Denmark’s prime minister,” speaking just hours before submitting her resignation. Domestic issues dominated the campaign, with voters citing the cost of living, taxes, welfare, migration, and environmental concerns, overshadowing geopolitical debates about Greenland and NATO. Had she succeeded in winning a third term, Frederiksen would have become Denmark’s longest-serving prime minister since World War II.

For every dollar Denmark spends on Ukraine, France sends 7 cents, Italy 7 cents, the US zero. Denmark has given 3.25% of GDP—the highest in the world. On election day, Ukraine barely comes up. Not because Danes don't care—70% agree on keeping the support going. A reporter walked Aarhus asking voters. Out of 40–50 people, one disagreed. His wife interrupted him. If all NATO countries had matched Denmark, Ukraine would have received $2 trillion—not $350 billion. euromaidanpress.com/2026/03/24/den…

Trump is raising tariffs on 8 NATO allies because they rightly support Denmark's sovereignty in Greenland. Destroying our closest alliances to take Greenland — which Denmark lets us use freely already — is insane. Congress must say NO.

European Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius: If the Americans will shift from Europe, how do we create a European pillar of NATO? How we will replace the 100,000 strong American standing military force, the backbone military force in Europe? A collection of 27 bonsai armies? Or the creation of a powerful standing European military force of 100,000 troops.

Watching people reacting to Trump's aggressive narrative on GREENLAND makes me wonder if they haven't been paying attention to how Trump does business or read his books? He ALWAYS goes big and outrageous at the beginning. He is trying to freak people out like, "Oh my God, is he really going to invade Greenland?!!!" No, he's not. He is trying to get everyone out of their comfort zone. He is making them think - wait this guy might just be crazy enough to do it - he just took down Maduro! Maybe we better make a deal while we can! Trump leverages "the fear of unpredictability." He moves everyone off the center by going extreme then moderates and retakes the middle; when everyone else comes back to the middle as they must, they come back to him. He always does this and people are still taken by surprise.
