Yesterday, representatives from Amnesty International Zimbabwe made a courtesy visit to Hon. Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, the Minister of Women's Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development. The delegates presented an overview of Amnesty International’s work in Zimbabwe and shared key findings from the organisation’s research report on Informal Cross-Border Trade, titled “Cross-Border Is Our Livelihood. It Is Our Job: Decent Work as a Human Right for Women Informal Cross-Border Traders in Southern Africa.” Informal cross-border trade (ICBT), valued at USD 17.6 billion in 2018 and constituting 30-40% of total trade in Southern Africa, is predominantly led by women. However, these women face challenges hindering their empowerment, inclusion, and right to decent work. During the meeting, opportunities for future collaboration were discussed, and the Minister expressed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing and prioritizing the rights of women in informal cross-border trade.

#InCaseYouMissedIt As part of its Climate Justice campaign, Amnesty International Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Eastern Arts Organisation, conducted two community dialogue sessions in Wendumba, Marange, last week. Participants included traditional village heads, councillors, religious leaders, farmers, community health workers, and young people. Using theatre as a tool for human rights education and incorporating participatory approaches, the two community dialogues empowered the Wendumba community to identify their climate-related priorities and co-create solutions that address their unique needs. These community dialogues also addressed climate change concepts, linked them to human rights, and identified mitigation strategies. Amnesty International Zimbabwe is committed to empowering communities like Marange to advocate for climate justice and build long-term resilience against the severe impacts of climate change. Join us in demanding #ClimateJusticeNow! 🌍✊

Igniting the passion of young minds through climate literacy! 🌍✨📚💚 Young people's climate literacy, which encompasses their understanding of climate change and its impacts, is crucial for fostering a sustainable future. While many young people are aware of climate change and possess the energy, creativity, and passion necessary to drive climate action and contribute to sustainable development, significant gaps remain in their knowledge and understanding of its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. Last week, Amnesty International Zimbabwe conducted climate literacy sessions in rural Masvingo province, targeting primary and secondary school learners. These sessions equipped learners with basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand the essential principles of the earth's climate system and the strategies for addressing human-caused climate change. Additionally, the engagements provided students with tools to communicate effectively about climate change with their families and communities. #ClimateActionNow! #ClimateJusticeNow!

Zimbabwe: Historic moment as President signs into law a bill to abolish death penalty for ordinary circumstances This is not just great progress for Zimbabwe, it is also a beacon of hope for the abolitionist movement in the region, and a major milestone in the global collective pursuit for an end to this ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment. By enacting the Death Penalty Abolition Bill, Zimbabwe has taken a major step towards aligning its laws with international human rights standards. Its actions also send a clear message about the fundamental importance of protecting the right to life and human dignity. Read more: amnesty.org.zw/2024/12/zimbab… @AmnestySARO @amnesty

In pictures | @amnesty_zim's physical launch of the Death Sentences and Executions 2023 report. As of today, 112 countries are fully abolitionist and 144 in total have abolished the death penalty in law or practice. Will #Zimbabwe be the next country to end the death penalty?
