So the NCAA has decided they need to get all those .500-ish P4 teams in by expanding the tournament to 76 teams. Even with 76 teams, some idiots will argue Miami OH shouldn't have been there over some 14-17 team that finished 10th in a power conference.

As someone who's had a major concussion from a direct mask hit, sybau. The mask is designed to keep you from being killed but I've seen many catchers and umpires injured this way. A glancing blow where it spins the mask off is far better than this.
fuckyoulibbies@britfitzgerald

@umpireplb @Seth_3773 The biggest bitch response I’ve ever seen. Direct mask hit is nothing. It’s designed to keep you from injuries and bro flopped worse than LeBron James 😂

@RichMSN @_piccone I actually want Crawford in CF 100% of the time and leading off. Marsh in CF vs lefties hurts both defense and offense with Kemp in LF. This offseason I wanted an everyday legit RH bat in LF, Crawford CF, Garcia experiment in RF & marsh as a backup. Still a RH hole in the lineup

I will not be gaslit into thinking that catch by Marsh wasn’t fantastic. And anyone that’s watched the Phillies’ defense the last few years would agree. People really show their ass on this app and then try to pull their pants up

@_piccone He’s a much better left fielder than center fielder. The problem for me is the combined offense out of the 3 OF positions and how he’s forced to play center at times bc they just won’t build a competent offensive crew out there.

I can't believe this is still such a thing. How many Final Fours has Ayres worked? He's one of the all-time best. Even the NCAA said this had nothing to do with him not working the F4 this season - other people had already been chosen. Everyone needs to move on, already.

@BaseballDudes48 What I don't understand is that MLB is more confident that something registering as a 0.1" miss is more accurate than the umpire. There is a margin of error for all technology. I'd be all for using ABS for every pitch judged to have missed by over an inch, but 0.1" is silly.

Another ABS prediction: The umpires, and their union, are going to take a stand at some point. Who knows, it might be them who pushes for ABS to take over all pitch calls. Imagine at your place of work, making a mistake you’ve been trained to do correctly, it being called out publicly in front of your peers, in front of 20-40k+ spectators, who knows how may folks watching on TV, AND that mistake(s) on replay on social media hundreds or thousands of times!! 😂😂 Something is going to happen. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

@xan_desanctis Let's also acknowledge that the margin of error for ABS is more than 0.1 inches, so who knows if that pitch was a strike or not by either definition. Dragging Estabrook (which some people are doing) over a pitch like this is just silly.

I get why people want ABS, and I’m likely in the minority here, but I much preferred the experience of watching baseball before the replay/challenge era, human error notwithstanding. Using tech to optimize everything is boring.
Rob Friedman@PitchingNinja

Umpire incompetence or a Rulebook/ABS Mismatch issue? 🤔 This pitch may have been both: -a Strike according the rulebook strike zone (3 dimensional/starting at the front of the plate), and -a Ball, according to ABS (2 dimensional/measured at the middle of the plate).

@WolverineChron I see the same thing. Been an official at the high school level for a long time so no stage like that, but context is always important. Also Ayers is one of the best officials of all time and I trust his judgment in the moment.

I’ve seen the Dan Hurley video a bunch of times now. Of course, my first reaction is why the hell wasn’t that a tech. It looks like he squared up with the ref and got in his face. But after watching the whole thing closely, I believe there’s another explanation. Hurley just had his jacket tugged on by his assistants who were celebrating. Many people in the arena had thought time had expired. Hurley was circling back to look at the court with his typical psychopath “I’ll fight you” stare, and the ref actually stepped into his face and said something like “we’re checking to see if/how much time is left on the clock” and Hurley immediately turns and walked back to the bench. The ref had to get right up in his face because the stadium was so loud. I know most people will call me an idiot and say that’s not what happened. But I’m curious if anyone else sees what I’m seeing there.

@RefObserver17 I wonder if Roger was telling him they put 0.4 on the clock -- or if he was telling him they were going to look at the clock. That was a key difference in how to defend the inbounds. There's communication there and Roger looked nonplussed. I mean, Hurley's nuts and all....

Someone needs to confirm if this is real for me. Was not shown on the broadcast. I’m inclined to believe this is AI nonsense, but these days hard to tell.

@RefObserver17 Took me till now to compare: 35 of 40 from last year. None of the standby officials from last year are on the list. Anyone know who the standbys are?

@ColtonWilson23 I personally am ambivalent. As an official it would clean up end of game situations. And as I slide towards retirement in the next decade or so it would give me a natural off-ramp where I could stay connected to the game. But as a friend texted me: this also. LOL.

Give it a listen, what are you thoughts on what happened? My biggest takeaway came from the craziness on here and not the actual game which shows how big of a cesspool of an echo chamber this app can be #Wisbb

@TravisBOUND Perhaps, but Twitter is just a place where I hold my nose these days to get what I want from it. Used to be a fun place pre-Elmo. And pre Grok.

One of the NCAA announcers just made one of the dumbest rules statements I've ever heard. "That's an awful call" Defense tipped ball off offensive players leg and it went into backcourt, & refs (correctly) called backcourt violation. You have to know the rules, come on now.

Some thoughts on the epic end of regulation in Kentucky-Santa Clara: 1. Herb Sendek was trying to call time out but the refs didn't see it. This is why I do NOT like the rule allowing coaches to call time out. Do you want refs looking at the bench or the court? That rule went away a few years ago but the coaches wanted it back. Get rid of it! 2. There's still some debate over whether fouling up three is the right strategy, but the evidence is quite clear. Fouling up three with under five seconds to play pretty much doubles your chances of avoiding overtime. No strategy is perfect but it is the right thing to do! 3. That said, it's hard to execute that in a scramble like in this case. Don't always assume the players know how many points they're up in that situation! Lots going on and they're not all totally locked in. Happens more than you think. So the question is what have you practiced for? What's your policy? They need to be properly trained for when the moment comes, whatever you decide. 4. At the end of the day, it was a crazy, halfcourt, banked in shot. Hoop happens! And so Otega Oweh shot himself forever into NCAA Tournament lore. Somewhere Cawood Ledford is smiling!
