The original, pre-Disney Pinocchio goes so much harder than you could imagine. The world isn’t receptive of this wisdom, but we desperately need it 👇🏻

When trust is low, transparency needs to be high. you don’t restore trust through lectures and PR. You restore trust through humility, integrity, accountability, and transparency.

**Are we just not smart enough to read the reports?** On The Baptist Review podcast, @dsons insinuated as much in one of his questions to Willy Rice. The question was as insulting as it was deceptive.

Tomorrow, the North Central Florida Baptists in Gainesville will vote on removing three egalitarian churches from their local association. As local pastor Alex Lanou writes, "Just because there is confusion in the broader SBC doesn’t mean that our association can’t be a shining beacon of biblical clarity, Baptist fidelity, and convictional courage at the local level." Pray that the convictional conservatives prevail in Gainesville! centerforbaptistleadership.org/the-fight-agai…

SBC Credentials Committee: "We need direction from the Messengers on what to do about churches with women pastors" Messengers: Vote 88% in favor of disfellowshipping Saddleback over women pastors. SBC CC: "If only the Messengers would give us some sort of sign..." Messengers: Vote 92% in favor of disfellowshipping Fern Creek over women pastors. SBC CC: "Why do the Messengers keep giving us such mixed signals? 😫" Messengers: >60% vote for Law Amendment three years in a row. SBC CC: "The will of the Messengers remains a complete mystery. 🤷‍♀️ "

The day before TN's abolition of abortion bill appears before the house subcommittee, the ERLC showed no support and couldn’t even call abortion the murder of a preborn child, instead, they call abortion “ending a pregnancy.”

I am hearing rumors of SBC splintering further and the Cooperative Program’s uncertainty. This is not a time for mincing words or dissembling. We must be honest about why we are at this precipice: 1) Abuse hysteria and overreach, and 2) Theological distrust and identity crisis. If you are one who has contributed to this problem but still loves the SBC: publicly repent and start working to shore up trust. I for one wouldn’t want to be in the history books as someone who contributed to the diminishment of the world’s largest Protestant denomination. Specifically, we need 1) A solution on the women pastors question. If you opposed the Law amendment, you are part of the problem. Stop it. I have also heard reports that the credentials committee is going in the exact opposite direction here. They are not helping. They are hurting. And 2) we need to act like an association of theologically aligned churches again, and stop acting like we have a Roman-type hierarchy. Wake up. The future of the SBC is not a guarantee.

My area of study is the mirrors-for-princes tradition. This book is an interesting work of retrieval for several reasons. Junius is explicitly engaging with two different authors. Martin Luther had written a mirror for princes, also based on Psalm 101. And Erasmus had written his mirrors for princes (speculum principum) and titled it "The Education of a Christian Prince." Junius writes an exegetical speculum based on Psalm 101 and uses the same title as Erasmus. So you have Junius, a student of Calvin, pulling together ideas from Luther and Erasmus, writing for rulers, and developing his own thoughts. By the end of his life, Junius was a professor in the Netherlands. By then, war was breaking out between the Protestants and Catholics. Protestant theologians are not just doing theology; they are trying to provide wisdom on just Christian rule to civil and military leaders. For example, few know that Richard Sibbes dedicated "The Bruised Reed" to Horatio Vere, the most famous Protestant military general of the time (and fighting in the Netherlands at the same time that Junius was teaching at Leiden. Junius's work is important in understanding how Reformed Protestants counseled civil and military rulers to lead in a distinctively Christian way.

The Reformed tradition rests on exegesis of such texts as Psalm 101 in its support of Christian nations. In this book translated by @postnuance, Franciscus Junius explains masterfully what the Lord requires from Christian princes. Tolle, lege.

G. K. Chesterton anticipated the problem of “toxic empathy” more than 100 years ago, explaining both its origin and its destructive potential:
