The reason he's wrong is many game devs have spent years hating players and now that players are fed up with broken 80 dollar releases that aren't even conceptually good ideas then getting told their poor for not wanting to buy it.
Yes, game dev is hard and it's your job so you would want to defend it. You know what's on the other side? People in a rough economy with their own hard jobs who you're asking to devote 80 dollars to something that, lately, doesn't even work, isn't fun and the plug will be pulled in a month with no way for them to even keep using it.
