This was sort of how I got my first real programming job. I had a data entry job, where I was supposed to check emails and generate invoices. I completely automated the job, so I would just hang out in the parking lot all day, smoking and drinking beers. Someone reported me to my manager, so he checked my performance metrics, and I was at the top of my team. I explained to them that I had automated my job, but it had genuinely not occurred to me that they might rather purchase this software than hire me. They ended up giving me a research and development role to develop new systems like that.

My first real job in 1998 was at a company that sold automotive parts. They had a small department of guys working through part catalogs and finding parts from different manufacturers that had the same specs and thus could be interchangable. In any case, the youngest guy in the small team worked out how to automate his job using OCR and Excel, but instead of telling his boss or coworkers, he'd do a day's work in 2 hours and then he'd just sit there and do nothing until the end of the day. If he showed his manager the probably would have promoted him but it never occurred to him. was that you lol

@spinelessaisha I think Linux in general is better on desktop, I remember getting poor battery on laptop compared to Windows

honestly someday i gotta sit and clean up my install... i've installed and uninstalled so many things and changed dekstops and stuff that there's probably so much residual stuff lying around now

@emmibees @spinelessaisha I think if you're on Debian or Ubuntu, you can use sudo apt autoremove to get rid of packages that serve no purpose
