In March 2023, the zoo closed the historic elephant habitat and shared that elephants would return in the future. That space was reimagined to expand Naylor Savanna with more room, a new state-of-the-art giraffe barn, and Spekboom Lodge. Since then, the zoo has continued work on future phases and expansion. “We are excited for the future of elephants returning to San Antonio Zoo,” said Tim Morrow, President & CEO. “We have been working through the zoo’s master plan for 10 years, and with the completion of The Ralston and Congo Falls, we now look west of 281 for our next expansion.” In a first-ever effort tied to the new habitat, the zoo is collaborating with design firms, Tesla, and industrial engineers to incorporate the “Alamo Loop.” First announced in 2021, the Loop would allow autonomous Teslas to travel along 281 from San Antonio Airport to Hemisfair Park, now rebranded as the “Alamo Elephant Loop.” San Antonio Zoo sits between these stops, and riders will have the opportunity to view elephants underwater as Teslas pass beneath zoo grounds. This tunnel system would transport passengers in fast, self-driving vehicles, easing traffic on 281 while offering a one-of-a-kind underwater elephant view. Inspired by Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, the zoo, Elon Musk, and engineers are designing the first-ever underwater vehicle tunnel viewing of elephants. Completion is anticipated by 4/1/2030. The zoo will care for Asian elephants, listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1986. Wild populations have declined at least 50% in 75 years due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching, with only 41,000–52,000 remaining. San Antonio Zoo supports conservation through the International Elephant Foundation. Zoo grounds were split when U.S. 281 was built (1969–1978), but access was preserved for future expansion.
