This week in Seattle, at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting, we shared compelling research on the relationship between self-neglect and future elder mistreatment within Adult Protective Services (APS). Our findings underscore the critical role self-neglect plays in predicting elder mistreatment in APS. A huge thank you to @geronsociety for hosting such an enriching conference, as well as Marti DeLiema and Elsie Yan for their roles as symposium chair and co-presenters. Thank you to @ACLgov for helping support this effort.

We’re thrilled to announce that the Administration for Community Living (ACL) @ACLgov has awarded funds to the RISE Collaborative to replicate and evaluate RISE-APS in three new locations throughout the US! Stay tuned for more info about the project and how to apply for replication funds. We’ll post updates soon -- here, on our website (risecollaborative.org), and via other elder justice networks.” @NAPSA_NOW

🎂Happy Birthday RISE!!! Five years ago today we worked with our first client. And now we have served over 900. We are so proud of our advocates and honored to work with our older adult clients and their families.

Check out our recent publication on the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) with cases of elder abuse and self-neglect: #citeas" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">link.springer.com/article/10.100… Older adults dealing with these issues are often reluctant to engage with services. We find that MI is a useful way to help them work through ambivalence and become open to change.

Congratulations to our RISE advocate, Chenell Small, who recently helped to get an older adult’s home back in a case of elder financial abuse, when an adult child sold the home without the older adult’s permission or knowing. A major impact on this older adult’s financial security.

First we heard from Dr. David Burnes about @RiseCollab’s paradigm-shifting work to prevent elder abuse from a restorative perspective that prioritizes building social connection and empowering elders.

@NCOAging @WISERwomen This a major issue. In addition to the financial toll, women carry the psycho emotional and physical burdens of caregiving.

@alzheimerssoc Thanks for sharing this resource. Alcohol use is also an important consideration within the context of elder mistreatment dynamics.

There’s been lots of talk about how drinking too much alcohol can increase a person’s risk of dementia this week. But you needn’t go cold turkey. A lifelong approach to good health is the best way to reduce your risk bit.ly/3UXa5ky

One of the key challenges to working with survivors of elder abuse is engaging them into services. They are often reluctant, not eager, to pursue formal supports: From your experiences, why is this? pic.twitter.com/m347gXsWPM
