It was discovered that he had contracted both pneumonia and Legionnaires’ disease, reportedly due to complications within the facility's water system. ​Due to his deteriorating physical state, Pate was eventually furloughed into hospice care. On September 30, 2025—less than a month after the incident—James Pate passed away. His passing brought a sudden end to the criminal proceedings, leaving a community with more questions than answers. There are also stories that he was suffering from dementia which was a contributor to his actions. According to cases files there is no evidence that he was diagnosed or suffered from dementia. Any moments of memory loss were most likely due to normal age related memory deterioration.
