@Xin78787 Korean and Vietnamese (and to a lesser extent Japanese) belong to a a general Chinese Sprachbund, where large amounts of Chinese vocabulary were adopted into structurally unrelated languages

@cremieuxrecueil Correct. The chinese study was not placebo controlled and had many flaws and conflicts of interest. Statins have decades of rct’s backing them. And nattokinase is available otc. Its not gatekeeped in any way.

@writerofscratch "Everyday life" is really a nebulous word. Not seeing a TL word/phrase when you order coffee or during superficial conversation living as an expat is quite a bit different than never seeing it when all your media, social relationships, and work. Both in a sense are everyday life

LaGuardia crash shows the real problem with US aviation: TOO MANY FLIGHTS, not enough manpower. Pilots, ATC, mechanics are all completely overworked, leading to situations like this. Bring back regulated flight schedules and these problems disappear.

@yakusou8 Meh, it's not that uncommon. Anyone who regularly reads Japanese books has run into it plenty of times to understand.

@OliverJia1014 I think a big part of it is you have (1) Extra pathetic learners who eg. take a couple years to learn kana, (2) Extra effective/hardworking learners. 1 will criticize 2 for setting unrealistic expectations and 2 will criticize 1 for never making any progress.

People who’ve studied languages like Russian, Italian, French, etc. Are those learning communities as abrasive and needlessly hostile as the people studying Japanese? I suspect soft power/weeb media is a big reason for why Japanese attracts a certain kind of person sometimes.

@SaGa_NeilB This reminds me of how the director of Elden Ring said he left the story of the game deliberately vague because when he was learning english he liked the feeling of not completely understanding the story.

Saw an interesting post on Reddit about a JP language learner who found that getting better at Japanese took away some of the magic of JP media. I think that's true for many people--even setting aside potential fetishism, there's a certain thrill in thinking about the unknown.

@OliverJia1014 As someone who learned Chinese to a decently high level, I can tell you there are words and idioms I come across that natives don't know. What domains you actually interact with are going to heavily influence the vocabulary you encounter.

So apparently や否や is used more than I thought, but I’m also getting people in the replies with N1 and others who’ve lived here for years telling me they’ve never seen it. I guess a lot of this grammar is only going to show up if you often read certain books or visual novels.
Oliver Jia (オリバー・ジア)@OliverJia1014

And this is why I hate the JLPT. I don’t think I’ve ever seen や否や used outside of studying for this exam.
