It assembled in the area east of Wiener Neustadt to confront the Soviet offensive. Following the fall of Vienna and St. Pölten, Peiper’s battle group continued to fight in the Alpine foothills; after the death of Adolf Hitler, the Leibstandarte withdrew westward from this area. Peiper addressed his men one last time and designated the town of Steyr as the rally point. On May 8, 1945, after crossing a bridge over the Enns River and ensuring the safety of the bulk of his troops, Peiper dismissed his soldiers and set out for home in Rottach to join his family.
