Peru investigates Russia’s recruitment of its citizens for the war in Ukraine. The Peruvian Prosecutor's Office has launched a preliminary investigation following numerous reports from families of missing relatives who traveled to the Russian Federation. According to their reports, people were lured by offers of high-paying civilian jobs -promising $2.6k to $4k per month and a $20k "welcome bonus.". However, upon arrival, they were sent directly to the front lines. Investigators are treating the case as potential crimes against human dignity, including aggravated human trafficking. Lawyers for the victims claim recruitment was carried out through international networks operating across Latin America. Documents were seized from those who arrived in Russia, after which they underwent brief military training and were deployed to combat zones. 8 deaths have been confirmed. Five Peruvians were wounded, and several others have not contacted their families for over two weeks. To date, Peru has successfully returned 18 citizens, with 9 more expected to return in the coming days.
