@PoliticoForYou Seems to me that Truss is a valuable voice to listen to. Just do the exact opposite of what she recommends. Guaranteed success.

@MrBarrago @missdcox That’s one of the two things I was thinking. The other is that it would take me LESS THAN A MINUTE to work it out. I’m calling bullshit.

@missdcox If true, that’s a really sad reflection on the values teachers are giving students and the impact Ofsted has on the profession

I heard a brilliant story about a school today.... The school had the call from Ofsted. One teacher told their class that when the inspector visits that when the teacher asks the class a question, those that DON'T know the answer to the question should put up their hands....

@DrRLofthouse All the time. Differentiation, AfL, formative assessment, metacognition… they mean different things to different schools. It’s tribal behaviour. Jargon is used to ‘belong’ in the club of the cognoscenti. It’s also used to exclude outsiders.

How often does edu-jargon get in the way of teaching, feedback, professional development, support for colleagues at every stage of the profession. It seems jargon has proliferated at the same time as the profession is being brought to its knees.

@giallo_punk @Miss_Snuffy They’ve existed at least since I was at school in 1982, although they were called ‘summer balls’ in those days. Also, it were all fields round here etc.

@Miss_Snuffy When did Proms become a UK thing? Never had them when I was a kid, I just remember them from US horror films. True of Halloween too.

@PearceMrs @SaysMiss Yes but collectively we need to filter out the excellent blogs and real research and promote it. Conversely we need to call out nonsense from the EEF and Teach Like a Champion which, too often, is trumpeted as cutting edge.

@PearceMrs @SaysMiss You had me until…EEF. I’ve honestly never read anything by them that doesn’t state the bleedin’ obvious. I actually laughed out loud at this little gem in their ‘3 major takeaways’ in this document

You want to turn around a failing school? First thing you look to is the uniform. Having a tight uniform is 101 basics in running a good school.

@BadSchoolparent @Miss_Snuffy Incorrect. Uniform has *never* been used as an indicator of behaviour compliance by Ofsted. Adherence to uniform policy is used as an indicator of the quality of leadership and management however.

@Miss_Snuffy Is that because uniform is used as an indicator of behaviour compliance by Ofsted, or is it something else (ie there’s a lesser spotted correlation between logos on socks and the ability to learn quadratic equations?). Or is it cos ‘those’ parents favour nice uniform #selection.

@Miss_Snuffy It is one of the things to tighten up on. The first? Probably not. Uniform is one of many indicators of the culture of a school, but not always. Just look at some Sheffield schools. Excellent schools, high attainment, great behaviour and…no uniform.

@ProudlyPastoral @MrJLauder Well, yes but…it’s a large MAT in a high density area. They do well to not PEX for the reasons you’ve outlined. They also have flexible managed move arrangements and more AP availability than, say the South West or coastal areas.

@MrJLauder Ahh okay, thanks! Always great when time and effort is put into the pastoral side of school and it pays off. This is how we reduce exclusions, not by just getting rid of them all together!

@MrJLauder @DixonsTA Yes of course. Lots of schools haven’t used PEX for years. The option does have to be there though for health and safety reasons mostly. Sadly, availability of AP and special provision is a postcode lottery. Where it isn’t, PEX is higher unfortunately

Really pleased with Millthorpe’s Ofsted report, particularly where inspectors have identified the many strengths in provision and improvements that have been made over the last couple of years. 😊

@teacherhead @ClareSealy It’s big in the recent Ofsted English report. I know some of it is nonsense but lack of oracy esp in sec schools chimes with what I see

Great to see oracy getting renewed focus. Lots to it; my view is we have a very long way to go just making quality pair talk absolutely routine. Too many lessons many kids don’t talk at all or are left to recycle weak ideas.> Think, Pair, Share Forensics. teacherhead.com/2022/10/24/thi…
