@infantrydort You need to compare their “fighting spirit” (how do you measure that anyway?) now when they are not going to be in the fight with what theirs was when they were in uniform. Bluster is easy when you don’t have to put anything on the line.

A stunning observation that I see more fighting spirit from veterans who’ve long since taken off the uniform, than I do from many actively wearing one.

Ike wasn’t wrong. That’s why it’s important to be able to win quickly.
It’s also not just to win. It’s to prevent your formation from reaching battle fatigue.
You want to claim victory before the demons of dread take hold in your mind.
My advice? Test the Generals.

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower distributed to his combat units a report by the U.S. Surgeon General that reveals the hazards of prolonged exposure to combat. The danger of being killed or maimed imposes a strain so great that it causes men to break down. One look at the shrunken, apathetic faces of psychiatric patients…sobbing, trembling, referring shudderingly to ‘them shells’ and to buddies mutilated or dead, is enough to convince most observers of this fact.” On the basis of this evaluation, as well as firsthand experience, American commanders judged that the average soldier could last about 200 days in combat before suffering serious psychiatric damage. British commanders used a rotation method, pulling soldiers out of combat every 12 days for a four-day rest period. This enabled British soldiers to put in 400 days of combat before being deleteriously affected. The Surgeon General’s report went on to lament the fact that a “wound or injury is regarded, not as a misfortune, but a blessing.” The war was clearly taking a toll on more than just men’s bodies. #Marines with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, @1stMEF, take part in certification training with Assault Amphibious Vehicles and Amphibious Combat Vehicles (ACVs) aboard the USS Somerset (LPD 25) as part of Quarterly Underway Amphibious Readiness Training 25.4 off the coast of @MCIWPendletonCA.
The training included splashing ACVs from ship to sea and re-embarking them aboard the ship as part of the certification.

Well, the discussion wasn’t about the parable, but if you wanna talk about that, I’m happy to do that. What you seem to be missing is that the love shown by the good Samaritan is so extravagant that every single person on this planet fails to meet that standard. Only one has ever shown that kind of love. And that was the point of the parable. To show us how far we are from God’s standard so that we realize that only by taking on the righteousness of Christ, could we ever meet it. It’s not actually a story just telling you to be nice to people. It’s a story pointing you to your need for a perfect Savior.
