The last 30 days Nathan Church has a 19 wRC+ and has been worth - 0.5 fWAR. He’s been one of the 5 worst players in baseball. I don’t know if Joshua Baez will be even worse but you have to give it a shot at some point

@TheLab_FBB But they’re already using a stupid 6 man rotation. Unless Castillo is also traded - which I wouldn’t be surprised with Seattle’s lineup isn’t good enough right now

I’d also say - I hate the whole ‘hight-T’ ‘alpha male’ shtick the loser tech bros put on but is there anything less ‘alpha’ or ‘low T’ than saying something controversial, being widely criticized and falling back on ‘you’re jealous I’m rich, tall poppy!’ Give me a break loser
Rob Silver@RobSilver

The tech dudes can’t have it both ways They think they have a right to an outsized voice in the future of public policy because of their biz success. If you criticize their dumb ass proposals its ’tall-poppy-syndrome’ You’re jealous Sorry bros, you’re just not that smart

Is there anything he could say then that shouldn’t be replied to and criticized because he started your successful company? Like this is a 9.8 out of 10 stupid. What would it take for it not to be ‘tall-poppy-syndrome’? Or is any criticism just being jealous of him?
Harley Finkelstein@harleyf

@aaronrubin This is the tall-poppy-syndrome at work. It’s insanely potent in canada.

Beyond not understanding basic taxation, if I keep my one vote and other rich Canadians get multiple votes (his idiotic proposal) then yes, I’ve ’lost my vote’ - it’s diluted because I’m poor or old. Or is it now ‘tall poppy syndrome’ to point out he’s Elon level dumb?
Rachel Gilmore@atRachelGilmore

Oh is the Shopify CEO like.......STUPID stupid? The system he called "good" suggested we hand out votes based on income tax paid. Does THE HEAD OF AN E-COMMERCE GIANT think sales taxes are income taxes?? Someone take away this man's phone!!!

@philngo_ @lucyhargreaves4 I don’t think I attacked Lucy personally Running an industry funded lobby organization is friggin hard work at the best of times. I’m sorry Lucy if it came across as a personal attack - that wasn’t how it was intended

Hey Lucy, Tobi might pay your lobby org’s bills but this is a problematic take The central premise of modern liberal democracies is the inherent equality of citizens Full stop Saying seniors are less equal is antithetical to democracy I love debate but this isn’t debatable.
Lucy Hargreaves@lucyhargreaves4

this is a ridiculous take the guy has created thousands of jobs in Toronto, sees the incredible potential of the city and country, and is frustrated that people with no stake in the future are the ones showing up and deciding for everyone else. I’m similarly frustrated to say tobi hates Toronto and Canada is wildly inaccurate he’s one of the best and brightest entrepreneurs canada has. we’d be lucky to have 1000 more. we need more people, not less, with the courage to say hard things and call a spade a spade when they see it. on the issues raised…personally, I’d love to see public consultations stacked with young people and contributing taxpayers who have real skin in the game. I don’t think wealthy people should get more votes, but in the spirit of thinking outside the box, maybe we should consider if it makes sense to have an age-out age for voting? a way to ensure we don’t create a society that caters to seniors but fails young people. a thought, to get the conversation started. a public square like X is great because it allows for open debate and disagreement. I’m sure I’ll hear a fair amount of that after I press “post”

@ruffoloj @davidheathTO I think it’s two things: 1. The post-COVID growth in asset values has exacerbated the divide between those who own assets and those who don’t - it’s natural that’s reflected in politics. 2. The growth of influence of rich Americans since Citizens United has leaked into Canada.

@davidheathTO @RobSilver The billionaires can take care of themselves. Its the narrative of attacking the perceived “rich” and the polarizing of class warfare ignited about a decade ago in Canada and still strongly simmering.

John - I have a ton of respect for what you’ve done in the business world but what are you talking about? It’s not controversial or contradictory to say: 1. All citizens should be equal in a democracy. 2. The wealthy should be taxed in a democracy.
John Ruffolo@ruffoloj

Fascinating debate on voting entitlements in Canada. What’s interesting is that the same folks who decry that the wealthy pay no taxes in Canada are now saying it’s ridiculous that they get all the votes in such a scheme. Pick a lane.

@MikePMoffatt In terms of democratic franchise (the sense I’m using it here) I don’t think it’s controversial In lots of other areas it’s of course not true.

@RobSilver But is it ok for chants of “death to billionaires” and basically extract and extort disproportionately from people who have earned their success. It cuts both ways. We have a serious disease of tall poppy syndrome in this country.

@ruffoloj Also if poor Canadians should - or can - lose their franchise because they vote for things that help make things a bit better for their family’s lives…I have bad news for the votes of wealthy Canadians when they argue for more tax cuts. Citizens are citizens

@ruffoloj Part of that is Canadians living longer ~ 50% of Canadians over 75 pay no net income tax But they’ve contributed to Canada for their lifetime The percentage of new Canadians who pay net income tax is higher than the general pop But losing voting rights based on income? Come on
