Asked lots of bad questions to baseball players in my time, but I made a lot of friends & wrote a book about it. Hopefully the book is better than my questions!

As a former MLB hitter I’m 50/50 on this. Genetics play a role I do believe. Size, strength, speed, etc. Sometimes the Packers would come hit with us in Milwaukee. There were a couple guys like Aaron and another that I can’t remember his name that could hit decently. Then there were others, a couple of the wide receivers and tight ends, physical specimen guys, that had terrible swings and no hand eye, even though they were freak athletes. Now with that said, hitting is all hand eye coordination. You can’t hit at the highest level without elite hand eye. Just like you can’t box without it, be a Tour golfer, or even play hockey. Doesn’t matter what your genetics are or what you were born with or how big and strong you are. My personal belief is that elite hand eye, and athleticism in general, can be trained into a child from a young age, regardless of genetics. @bobbystroupe friend of mine and strength coach for Pat Maholms once told me this is possible if you start them at a young enough age. I’d be interested to hear opinions from any strength coaches or professionals in the field of elite athlete development to hear their thoughts on this concept.

The scout who signed Konnor Griffin is none other than the son of Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski. And as fate would have it, Darren will be in attendance today as his late father is honored in a pregame ceremony. More from @JonathanMayo: atmlb.com/3PQW1Ze

Konnor Griffin is expected to be called up by the Pirates ahead of their home opener Friday!
