The Government will collect £331bn in income tax this year, and spend £333bn on welfare. In other words, we now spend more on people not working than we raise from those who do. And the cost? Debt per person has risen from £11.5k in 2000 (inflation adjusted) to over £41k today.

Defence secretary John Healey is a decent man in a difficult job since, at a time of growing global threats, he’s part of a government that won’t spend more on defence. He also picked the short straw by having to do this morning’s media rounds. He was unable to answer a simple question put to him multiple times — do we or do we not support US/Israeli attacks on Iran? This after the government had 24 hours to agree an answer and after numerous meetings yesterday in Whitehall and on zoom to discuss it. It is surely incumbent on the government to have a position, one way or the other. Failure to do so condemns the UK to irrelevance, a route which Starmer has already taken us some way down.

Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement calls on international community to take decisive action against Iran. The Kingdom strongly "condemns and denounces the treacherous Iranian aggression." Iran strikes are a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty” of the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. It pledges “full solidarity” with every attacked nation. Saudi Arabia is “placing all its capabilities to support them in all measures they take.”

The more details emerge about the Gibraltar deal, the worse it gets. Now we learn that Spanish forces will be allowed to board Royal Navy vessels under the terms of the treaty. This is a total capitulation. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/202…

Reeves's tax attacks are making UK banks even less competitive The total tax rate inflicted upon UK lenders rose to 46.4% in the last year, up from 45.8%, primarily due to Reeves’ employers NI hikes. In the 2024-25 financial year, the total tax contribution from UK banks reached £35.2bn, up from £23.3bn before the financial crisis. In reality bank taxes are transferred to bank services & customers, resulting in increased costs across the broader economy. It's time to scrap the bank levy and corporation tax surcharge.

The UK has more universities in the top 50 universities in the world than France, Germany, Spain and Italy combined. So since the UK has proportionally more top universities, perhaps the EU is paying us to join Erasmus+? Unfortunately, not.
