AMP PBC Founder @AnjneyMidha says the massive amount of AI compute being wasted in the U.S. is a national security crisis: “Every dollar of long-term lease that an AI lab takes today, you lose about 30–40% of FLOPs in just bad scheduling. The nodes are just straight-up not allocated.” “Then within the chip, you only have like 15% of the chip being utilized. That’s called MFU, model FLOP utilization, because the chip is waiting around for some other process to complete: storage, memory, networking, or some other chip to hand it off.” “If you compound those two things, of every dollar, only 15% of FLOPs are actually being utilized. That 85%? That’s a national security crisis, because that’s what’s keeping us from staying at the frontier.” “Am I building up more supply? But also, are we utilizing the existing capacity to get the maximum output possible? Both those things are what’s going to keep us at the frontier.”

I'm excited to share that I've joined @amppublic. Our mission is to build the Independent AI Grid. Compute (and Talent) is the scarcest resource at the frontier, and right now access decides who gets to innovate. The best AI breakthroughs won't all come from a handful of giant labs. They'll come from independent teams, if those teams can actually get compute at scale. That's the problem we are solving. As a public benefit corporation, we pool compute across independent teams so they can operate at frontier scale without giving up what makes them independent. Nobody builds their own power plant to turn on the lights. Compute should work the same way. I couldn't have picked a more aligned, brilliant team to build with, and I'm fired up for what's ahead. Let's go!

I come from a family of Greek immigrants that came to this country for a better life. @america has given us extraordinary opportunity to improve our situation. My grandfather was a waiter. He raised a doctor, an executive, and a professor. My father came as a graduate student to contribute to space science and technology. My wife is an amazing scientist and professor at Stanford, another immigrant from Serbia. I’d never have met her without the opportunities this country gave us. Great people from all over come to America to enjoy the freedom and meritocracy that you can’t get anywhere else. We celebrate our diverse cultures while achieving in our careers at the highest level, and ultimately doing something meaningful with our lives. Today is a great reminder to protect the values that make our country special. I am so proud to be a Greek-American. Happy 250, @america!
