@philrosenn Great example of something I have been urging students when they come in. Build a body of work and start developing a voice. It will get you noticed. Perhaps more importantly it help you work out your own direction.

I first started writing online when I moved to Hong Kong after college. Up to that point I’d never shared anything besides Instagram photos. I moved overseas with a pre-med degree that no longer held my interest and a chip-on-the-shoulder drive to become a full-time writer. Because I didn’t have a clue how to make that happen, I had no choice but to focus on the verb (writing) rather than the noun (being a writer). So I worked a local English teaching job and spent my evenings writing about what it was like being an expat in Southeast Asia. To borrow a term from investing, writing on the internet was the only way for me to “get off zero.” I realize now that the instincts of a beginner can be strangely powerful. Especially in an open-ended field like writing and media, a novice still has the boldness that conventional training usually dulls over time. My thinking at the time went like this: Creating a body of work for free seemed like the best way to eventually convince someone to let me do it for a living.

I then heard them say, `why don't we get off at the next station, grab a cup of tea and talk.' The woman in distress said she didn't want to impose and in the most lovely way, the woman of the couple said `this is where we should be.' And off they got. I hope all are doing ok.

Then a middle-aged couple in their Sunday best sitting further down noticed and moved up to the woman, offering tissues and comfort. The woman seemed to really appreciate it

A short thread on some wholesomeness I saw yesterday on the Circle line tube. I was heading for some shopping before the Euros final and there were just a few others in the carriage. Out of the corner of my eye I see someone lean across the seats to check on a woman opposite
