Well, sometimes it takes compromise to pass legislation. Because we live in a democracy.
Cities have leeway in how to implement SB79 as part of that give and take.
Wanting cities to use that flexibility responsibly, and applying same perspective to city planning that inspired the statewide law - that we are in a housing emergency - is definitionally GOOD faith.
Also worth saying: there is SOME good in what LA is doing, because it will lead to increased development in places that would have been exempted from SB79 altogether.
But all in all, it is a shame that LA is doing less when it could be doing more. Given the scale of the crisis.

Then maybe the YIMBYs shouldn't have put this provision into their beloved SB-79 law. Were they simply expecting that no city would ever use it? Side note. This is also why I don't like YIMBYs. Nothing they do is ever in good faith. Because they'll agree to "compromise" but then Scott Wiener will go back as soon as he can & move to get rid of that previously agreed to compromise. Here, they're not even waiting for that. They put in a provision to secure passage of SB-79 and are now angry about it being used and are ranting away about how evil Los Angeles is. For following their own god damn law.

Here are the FACTS. On February 19, 2026, Buffalo Police Department alerted Border Patrol about a non-citizen in their custody. Our agents confirmed that Mr. Shah Alam entered the United States as a refugee on December 24, 2024, and was not amenable to removal. Border Patrol agents offered him a courtesy ride, which he chose to accept to a coffee shop, determined to be a warm, safe location near his last known address, rather than be released directly from the Border Patrol station. He showed no signs of distress, mobility issues, or disabilities requiring special assistance.
