It’s not just white South Africans facing discrimination. Black South Africans are increasingly turning against black migrants from other African countries. In township “board meetings,” locals are confronting shop owners who are often Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, or other non-African migrants, and demanding they fire their non-South African Black workers and replace them with black locals. Compounding the intimidation is collective punishment: if even a few owners refuse to comply, the entire group of shopkeepers faces repercussions. This is happening in a country that now has more race-based laws on the books than it did at the height of apartheid.

Officials say the birds did not die from natural causes, predators, or vehicle collisions, raising concerns about a possible wildlife crime.
