What hits the farmer, doesn't stay with the farmer; the perish inevitably travels far and beyond. A studied exposé of the #climate-induced perils that those unconnected with farms must read, and ponder the implied individual action mantra: Reduce consumption, change diets!

My heart breaks over what PMC and its political backers have done to Pune's river. Yes, people should be connected to rivers - but like this?! A better version of a riverside recreational space would have been something like this. This is a riverside park in Taipei where 1. Natural materials have been used (not concrete), 2. Flood plains have been preserved 3. Habitats created for birds, insects and small fauna This would have come at a fraction of the cost of Pune's RFD, is aesthetically more appealing, and could have been designed to suit our native ecosystem with the help of riverine ecologists. 🧵

Add to this that most scientists are weary of media, and those who speak base their comments on scientific literature that is available in the public domain. In addition, this circular goes against the govt's policy on Scientific Social Responsibility: nature.com/articles/d4158…

The ICAR circular restricting media interaction is based on 1964 rules. These rules in fact say that no sanction is required for media communication if it is of scientific character. These rules are for protecting confidential official information, not to withhold science.

@karma44921039 On average, US net-zero in emissions would mean 0.1°C less global warming. Note that this is averaged across the globe and across time, hour by hour and day by day, over the long run! Read more: x.com/RockSea/status…

Excellent question on "net zero & global warming" that demands a quantified response. On average, US net-zero in emissions would mean 0.1°C less global warming. Note that this is averaged across the globe and across time, hour by hour and day by day, over the long run! 1/3

If US, China, EU, India & Russia reach net zero, it would reduce future warming and hold it near 1.5°C rather than 2°C. Less warming means less intense extremes on average, including heatwaves, heavy rains and floods, droughts, hurricanes, glacier melt and sea level rise. 3/3

Each 0.1°C matters because impacts scale with warming. Every fraction of a degree adds more extreme heat, heavier rainfall, higher drought risk in many regions, and additional sea level rise. 2/3

Ministry of AYUSH will receive ₹44,000,000,000 (Forty-four thousand million / Forty-four billion Indian Rupees) this year for promoting pseudoscience, creating more stethoscope-wearing Instagram quacks, building more unscientific institutions, and endangering peoples liver and kidneys.

No denying it, an event like the Pune Grand Tour is a shiny feather in Pune’s cap. After all, this was once a city known for its cycling culture. But here’s where it gets interesting, if Pune admin can conjure up world class roads for an event, what exactly have Pune citizens done in the last 10-12 yrs to not deserve them? Punekars ni kay ghoda marlay? A city’s sporting culture isn’t defined by one annual international spectacle (assuming this becomes one). It’s defined by how safe, accessible & popular the sport is among its own citizens. So if we trumpet world class roads for a cycling event, we should be honest about what everyday riders have been facing: roads full of pot holes, shoddily patched up drainage, unruly traffic ..
