Women in Texas are already dying because state leaders have banned abortion, and Black women in Harris County face the highest pregnancy-related risks in the nation. This ruling is as dangerous as it is cruel.

Yesterday, a federal court sided with anti-abortion extremists hellbent on stripping women of their freedom and autonomy, bringing us one step closer to their ultimate goal of a national abortion ban. This ruling further endangers women in Texas, where abortion is entirely banned and telehealth has been a lifeline.

Art should not be a luxury, and access to it should not depend on your zip code. Yesterday, my office joined local artists to unveil 6 new downtown murals—bringing us to over 80 pieces of public artworks brought to life since 2023. These murals showcase the stories, struggles, and dreams of our communities, and it’s my hope that they continue to spark the conversations needed to build a better, more just tomorrow. In the midst of a national affordability crisis, the White House and the state of Texas have abandoned workers to curry favor with billionaires—culminating in policies like “Right to Work" laws that undermine workers and strip them of their power. In the face of these attacks, Harris County has developed a blueprint for local governments everywhere to fight back—no matter who sits in the statehouse. This May Day, we’re proud to celebrate our labor movement’s rich legacy by standing up for working people.
