Yesterday, we kicked off our FY27 budget season with community members and partners from across Harris County. This year's budget conversation is centered on a simple goal: building a safer Harris County for all people to live, work, and thrive. The decisions made over the next few months will shape the services families depend on and the investments our communities need. Thank you to everyone who joined us to help launch this effort. We look forward to continuing the conversation at upcoming budget town halls and public meetings, because the strongest budget is one that's informed by the people it serves.

Packed day of meetings ahead. The only way I could squeeze in an additional one with my old friend LarRence Snowden was to make him workout with me.

It was great to spend time with the young athletes participating in the One For All Foundation's 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Over five weeks, they're learning teamwork, leadership, and discipline while building friendships and having fun. I'm grateful to the One For All Foundation and everyone who makes this program possible. Investing in our youth means investing in opportunities like these that help them grow on and off the court.

Yesterday, we broke ground on the Poor Farm Ditch Project, a critical investment in protecting families and neighborhoods from future flooding. Through a strong partnership between local, state, and federal leaders, this $32.7 million project will modernize aging drainage infrastructure, improve water flow in the Brays Bayou watershed, and help reduce flood risk for approximately 500 homes in West University Place and Southside Place. Every flood mitigation project brings us one step closer to a more resilient Harris County. I'm grateful for Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, State Rep. Ann Johnson, Mayor Andy Chan, Mayor Susan Sample, Marcus Stuckett, and everyone who helped make this investment possible.

Thank you to Rep. @SalmanBhojaniTX and the Texas Religious Freedom Caucus for hosting this community roundtable in Houston! It was an honor to join faith leaders from different traditions to discuss the values we share and how we can work together to protect the religious freedom of ALL Texans.

Years in the making! Today, I was glad to join Mayor Andy Chan, Mayor Susan Sample, @VoteAnnJohnson, @HCFCD, and community leaders to break ground on the Poor Farm Ditch project! The partnership that has made the Poor Farm Ditch Rehabilitation Project possible reflects what we can do when we work together. It has been a collaborative process, and I am proud to have secured nearly $10 million in congressionally directed funds to move this project forward.

History will judge how this moment was handled, and Harris County should be able to say we did everything within our power to preserve the evidence and uncover the truth.

This morning, I joined Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare and the Office of Commissioner Lesley Briones to announce I will take action through Commissioners Court to fund the DA's independent investigation into the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. We must ensure the DA’s office has all necessary resources to thoroughly pursue every lead and preserve every fact. This tragedy happened in a Harris County neighborhood to a Harris County resident. We have not only the authority but the obligation to investigate. Commissioners Court has taken steps to fund independent investigations before. This case deserves nothing less.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s life had value. His family, Harris County, and the American people deserve answers. District Attorney Sean Teare has taken an important first step by opening an independent investigation. His responsibility is to follow the facts wherever they lead. Our responsibility is to make sure he has the resources to do so.
