@jpalmiotti I actually hate to take them out of their plastic in order to re-read them. I do like going through them, though. Even if only to relive the acquisition of these comics. I make exceptions with Whilce Portacio’s comics. Those are like a cold pizza slice on a rainy afternoon.

Is reading older comics, ones you had as a kid, considered comfort food?

@pvponline As someone who was making webcomics in the 2010s inspired by the success of creators like you, this thread is a succinct and honest answer. I don't know how the independent webcomic works today.

Guh. I have no good answer to this question. I don't know any webcartoonist right now that isn't struggling with how people consume comics these days. It's not something I can answer in one tweet. So let me put down some thoughts in a thread for you:

The biz model we used for years was: host your own website, run ads, sell merch, go to cons. That doesn't work anymore in my opinion. Banner ads are dead. Nobody visits individual websites for content . Merch sales are difficult and cons are expensive and poorly attended

@pvponline While Webtoons and Tapas may not make you any money up front, they serve the more important task of helping to deliver your content to the masses. Keep spending down and grow your audience, first. If you make a true audience, they’ll become fans which will follow and support you.

Most webcomics these days are read via central platforms the artist doesn't control. That might be Instagram or Webtoons and Tapas. Better reach than hosting your own website but you're only making money for them, very little for yourself. I don't think that's a great option.

@pvponline Additionally, Patreon should be reserved as a later stage, since your first stage should be gathering an audience.

You can set up a Patreon as your central platform but that's a full time job in addition to making your content. Subscriber acquisition and sustainability is really tough. It's so much work. And I don't know if I believe the ROI is worth it.

@pvponline This hits the nail on the head! If you love your craft and give authentic stories, your audience will absolutely grow.

That being said, the most important thing is to love making your art. The only real success in cartooning comes from the joy of putting something out into the world, being a small light in the darkness. You have no idea how profoundly your work can affect someone who reads it.
